Mumbai's new Vidyavihar bridge opens naming debate

Mumbai is preparing to open its newly constructed Vidyavihar east-west flyover, a vital 650-metre infrastructure project designed to connect Ghatkopar's eastern and western suburbs seamlessly. Ahead of its formal commissioning, local civic representatives have put forward competing proposals to name the landmark structure.

BJP MLA Parag Shah submitted an official request to civic authorities proposing that the new overbridge be named after Captain Smit Machchhar. Captain Machchhar, an Indian commercial pilot, earned global acclaim after successfully thwarting a violent mid-air hijacking attempt aboard a Tel Aviv-bound flydubai flight.

In response, leaders from Shiv Sena (UBT) submitted a letter to Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and displayed banners on the bridge advocating for the structure to be named "Padma Shri Nana Patekar Setu", in honour of the veteran actor.

Addressing the competing proposals, Ganesh Khankar, leader of the house in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), commended Nana Patekar's artistic achievements while noting that a cultural complex would be a more fitting tribute for an actor. Khankar accused Shiv Sena (UBT) of attempting to generate political controversy over the completed infrastructure project.

Strategic infrastructure link across Mumbai railway tracks

The 650-metre, two-lane Vidyavihar overbridge marks a significant advancement in local urban mobility, easing suburban transit across central Mumbai. Built by the BMC, the project bridges the major railway corridor dividing the eastern and western sections of the area.

Key features of the infrastructure project include:

  • A 100-metre central section spanning directly over active railway tracks.
  • Approach roads measuring 220 metres on the eastern side and 330 metres on the western side.
  • Direct connectivity between Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg in eastern Vidyavihar and Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Ghatkopar West.
  • Station access upgrades, including reconstructed ticket booking offices, station master facilities, staircases, and footpaths.

Comparing the naming proposals
