Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal resigns on live TV but president insists he is staying

What happened at the press conference?

Just minutes after leading Fenerbahce to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Roma, Ismail Kartal sat down for his post-match press conference on Thursday night and quit.

"As of this evening, I congratulate my players and resign from my position," Kartal told reporters. He added that he was making the decision to "pave the way" for the club, and that he was leaving with the intention of never coming back.

Kartal, 65, then walked out of the room without taking any questions, leaving his players and staff completely in the dark.

Who is actually in charge?

According to Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim, Kartal is not going anywhere. Minutes after the coach’s dramatic announcement, Yildirim released a statement on the club's website rejecting the resignation out of hand.

"Ismail Kartal is still in charge," Yildirim said. "Until I leave, Ismail Kartal is the head coach of Fenerbahce."

Yildirim later told reporters that he had spoken directly with Kartal and ordered him to remain in his post. "There’s no need for him to say that he’d continue," Yildirim said. "I am his senior, I told him to continue and that’s it. We are a family."

Whether Kartal will actually show up to training or lead the team in their next match remains to be seen.

Why did Kartal try to resign?

The pressure on Kartal has been building for weeks, but the breaking point came during Thursday’s match.

A spectator threw a plastic water bottle from the stands, striking Kartal on the head. In a post on social media, Fenerbahce confirmed that the individual responsible had been identified and banned from the stadium.

Yildirim said the bottle incident, combined with intense, relentless criticism from the media and supporters, had pushed the manager to the edge. The president criticised those fans who threw objects, saying they could not show support by "throwing punches" at the coach.

How did the players react?

The news caught Fenerbahce’s players completely by surprise. English defender Archie Brown, who had just scored a 48th-minute equaliser to earn Fenerbahce a point, was told about his manager's resignation during a live post-match television interview.

"What do you mean he resigned? As coach? He’s not the coach any more?" Brown asked, visibly baffled. "I didn't know about this."

Brown's equaliser had cancelled out Bryan Cristante’s first-half opener for Roma.

What happens next?

Kartal only returned to Fenerbahce in June for his fourth spell as manager, tasked with leading the club in their first Champions League campaign in 18 years.

But domestic results have been disappointing. Fenerbahce currently sit ninth in the Turkish Super Lig after winning two and losing two of their opening four games, including a painful 2-1 home defeat to rivals Besiktas on Saturday.

With games against Aston Villa and Liverpool coming up in the Champions League, the club now faces a bizarre standoff: a manager who has publicly quit, and a president who refuses to let him walk out the door.
