The NFL has suspended referee Adrian Hill for one game for unprofessional conduct following a heated on-field altercation with Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson during Sunday's game.

The confrontation took place during the Vikings' 15-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins. The whistle had already blown when Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon II shoved Wilson from behind, sending the linebacker hurtling into Hill. The referee was knocked backward to the turf.

Wilson turned and reached out with both hands to help Hill to his feet. Rather than accepting the gesture, Hill got up under his own steam, stepped straight towards Wilson, and began shouting in his face while pointing him back towards his huddle. Wilson pointed at Gordon to explain that the Dolphins runner had pushed him, before a second official intervened to separate the two. Hill did not throw a penalty flag on the play.

Wilson played down the confrontation in the locker room afterwards.

"That was funny, honestly," Wilson said. "I ended up apologising to him and explained the situation. He was cool about it. He understood what was going on. He just said he didn't want us fighting, me and [Gordon]. He said he was just trying to break us up."

Scrutiny on officiating conduct

The league looked at the footage differently. Hill's confrontation was one of several clashes between officials, players, and coaches across Week 4 that prompted disciplinary reviews.

In a separate incident, the league handed official Jeff Seeman a two-game suspension. Seeman appeared to direct a profane insult at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride after McBride appealed for a pass interference call.

That exchange drew a sharp response from NFL Players Association president JC Tretter before the discipline was announced.

"This kind of behaviour from an official towards a player is unacceptable," Tretter said. "Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard."

Sunday also saw tensions flare on the sideline in New England. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after swearing at a down judge over a contested pass interference decision. Vrabel later called the official "a little sensitive" for throwing the flag.

Hill will miss one assignment under the suspension before being eligible to return to the field.
