Rayo Vallecano’s La Liga fixture against Athletic Club was abandoned inside the opening half-hour on Saturday after home supporters showered the pitch with paper planes and debris in protest against club president Raúl Martín Presa.

The match was Rayo’s first game back at the Estadio de Vallecas in 147 days, following an enforced exile caused by severe safety violations. But the return to Madrid lasted less than 30 minutes before police advised the referee to call a definitive halt with the score at 0-0.

What happened during the match

The protest began on cue in the 13th minute, the moment during home matches when Rayo ultras traditionally chant for Presa to resign. Hundreds of paper aeroplanes and small rubber balls rained down from the stands onto the turf.

The referee halted play, stadium stewards hurried to clear the grass, and the public address system warned supporters that any further disruption would lead to an immediate abandonment. Rayo players Óscar Valentín and Isi Palazón walked over to plead with the Bukaneros, the club’s ultras group situated behind the goal.

After a break of around 15 minutes, the teams resumed playing. Within moments, supporters in the south stand launched another barrage of objects onto the pitch, including plastic seats. The referee took both teams off the field. While players briefly emerged with the intention of playing on, the match officials decided to call the game off entirely.

Rayo confirmed the abandonment in a statement, saying the decision had been taken on the direct recommendation of the police. Spanish daily Marca reported that riot police intervened in the ground when several fans attempted to reach the playing surface.

Why Rayo fans are protesting against Presa

Presa has owned Rayo since 2011, and relations with the fanbase in the working-class Madrid neighbourhood of Vallecas have deteriorated steadily for years. Supporters accuse him of neglecting basic infrastructure, underinvesting in facilities and running the club with contempt for matchgoers.

The anger reached a breaking point earlier this year. A safety audit of the regional-government-owned Estadio de Vallecas uncovered serious hazards, including fire-protection deficiencies, faulty emergency lighting, electrical hazards, hygiene and sanitation failures, and a risk of Legionnaires’ disease. Crucial safety paperwork was also missing.

The issues forced Rayo to play their first three home matches of the league campaign at the Estadio Butarque in nearby Leganés, about ten kilometres away. Most Rayo fans boycotted those fixtures, leading to record-low attendances in La Liga. While Presa blamed regional authorities in Madrid for unfairly targeting the club, supporters placed the blame squarely on his management.

What happens next

Neither La Liga nor the Spanish football federation has announced when, or under what conditions, the remainder of the fixture will be played.

Athletic Club confirmed in a club statement that they will arrange refunds for their travelling supporters who made the trip from the Basque Country to the capital.
