Discord voice servers go down, leaving thousands stuck on 'waiting for voice server'

Discord voice calls cut out for thousands of users late on Thursday night, leaving gamers and online communities stranded on frustrating loop screens.

The platform acknowledged the issue on its official status page at 12:21 am Eastern Time on Friday, 11 September, confirming an "Issue with establishing voice calls." The company's status report noted that technicians were actively investigating the problem, but it did not provide a timeline for when services would return to normal.

What happened to Discord?

Outage tracker Downdetector recorded a rapid surge in complaints starting around midnight. Within a short period, reports spiked past 14,000 as users realised they could not connect to their usual channels. The vast majority of those reports—roughly 90 per cent—pointed directly to voice call failures, rather than general text chat or app login errors.

Most users attempting to join a channel were met with persistent "Waiting for Voice Server" or "Awaiting Endpoint" error messages. The sudden silence triggered a wave of search interest, with terms like "Discord waiting for voice server" and "Discord outage" trending heavily on Google as people scrambled to find out if the problem was on their end.

Why are users seeing 'waiting for voice server'?

For many, the outage disrupted late-night routines and ongoing gaming sessions. "Ah yes, it's always last-minute moments when Discord decides 'yeah, we are gonna shut down VC for a bit'," one user posted online. Another lamented: "How am I gonna sleep call with Discord down?" Others complained that the service had gone down twice in a short span of time.

The disruption was felt acutely in major US metropolitan hubs. Downdetector’s activity map showed the heaviest clusters of reports originating in cities like New York and Houston.

With their primary communication tool broken, users resorted to alternative platforms. Some reported moving group chats to Google Meet or WeChat to keep their conversations going. Others tried to wait out the disruption, though even those who managed to reconnect reported lingering issues with screen sharing and streaming. "Discord is down but not down, but it's definitely down but not," one user posted alongside a recording of their glitching app.

How to fix the voice server error

Because the issue lay on Discord’s own servers, standard troubleshooting steps offered little help. Usually, users facing connection glitches can resolve them by restarting the app, switching their virtual voice region, or flushing their DNS cache. But with a confirmed backend failure, players had little choice but to wait for an official fix.

The company has not yet detailed what caused the sudden failure of its voice infrastructure.
