Jio Platforms enters global top 20 patent filers as research shifts to pre-6G technology
The Indian telecom leader has climbed 320 spots in international rankings, backing its indigenous technology stack with over 7,200 patent applications.

Jio Platforms has entered the world's top 20 international patent filers under the World Intellectual Property Organization's Patent Cooperation Treaty system, climbing 320 places in the global rankings. The leap highlights India's growing role as a hub for core technology innovation, with domestic engineering driving intellectual property on a global scale.
Company figures show Jio Platforms had filed a total of 7,220 patent applications as of March 2026. A substantial majority of these applications extend beyond domestic borders, reflecting the global reach of the research and development conducted inside the country.
| Patent status | Count |
|---|---|
| International applications | 4,424 |
| Domestic applications (India) | 2,393 |
| Total patent applications | 7,220 |
| Patents granted | 1,009 |
Research focus shifts to pre-6G and satellite technology
Jio's technological ambitions are advancing beyond its current network infrastructure. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress in October 2026, Jio Platforms Managing Director Akash Ambani said the company has already begun filing patents in the pre-6G space as it prepares for future standards in wireless communications.
Ambani also confirmed that Jio is developing its own proprietary satellite communications technology stack. The company has already demonstrated this indigenous system to the communications minister, marking another milestone in India's expanding digital infrastructure capabilities.
Indigenous engineering workforce drives network delivery
At a press conference in Mumbai, Ambani attributed the company's patent growth to an in-house team of 12,000 engineers who built Jio's end-to-end technology stack. This internally developed stack supported one of the world's fastest network deployments, with Jio completing its 5G rollout in 19 months to cover 99 per cent of India's population.
Alongside telecom hardware and connectivity, Jio is expanding its focus on artificial intelligence. Ambani highlighted an ongoing partnership with Google around its Gemini platform, which helped create a new market and added 30 million subscribers for the flagship AI product.
To bring AI utilities to more users, Jio plans to introduce a voice-based AI tool offering transcription and summarisation in 12 Indian languages at no extra cost.
