Andhra Pradesh heavy rain: Northeast monsoon brings downpours to Annamayya and Chittoor
Downpours across Rayalaseema replenish water bodies and support early rabi crops as the state monitors weather conditions.

What happened in Annamayya and Chittoor
Heavy rain swept through Annamayya and Chittoor districts over 24 hours, bringing intense downpours across Rayalaseema following the arrival of the northeast monsoon. Precipitation in Annamayya was distributed across all three revenue divisions, giving the region its first heavy spell after a prolonged dry period.
Piler division recorded the highest cumulative rainfall in Annamayya district at 233.6 mm, led by Gurramkonda with 45.0 mm and Kalikiri with 44.6 mm. In Madanapalle division, Madanapalle town logged 63.0 mm, while Ramasamudram recorded 56.8 mm. Rayachoti division registered 113.0 mm in total rainfall, with Sambepalli receiving 36.2 mm.
In neighbouring Chittoor district, intense afternoon and evening thunderstorms hit Chittoor town, Kuppam, Palamaner, Bangarupalem, and Gudipala. Low-lying areas experienced brief waterlogging before drainage cleared, while administrative teams maintained vigil to ensure public safety.

Agricultural gains and water security
Irrigation and horticulture officials reported that the downpours will directly benefit local agriculture ahead of early rabi sowing. Crops such as groundnut, paddy, ragi, and tomato that were under moisture stress from high temperatures are expected to recover.
The rainfall is also expected to boost water storage in local irrigation tanks, check dams, and agricultural borewells. Farmers cultivating mango, vegetables, and flowers across Chittoor, Madanapalle, Piler, and Kuppam welcomed the timely arrival of the monsoon, citing its value for crop quality and groundwater recharge.
What the weather forecast shows
The India Meteorological Department stated that the northeast monsoon set in over Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, driven by an upper-air cyclonic circulation near south coastal Tamil Nadu. The southwest monsoon has officially withdrawn from the entire country.
For the October-December season, the weather office forecasts normal rainfall across south peninsular India, with totals likely to range between 88 per cent and 112 per cent of the long-period average.
Meteorologists have issued warnings for isolated heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph, across Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema over the next five days. State and district authorities continue to monitor conditions closely to maintain local transport routes and public services.
