Donald Trump’s planned visit to Tuscaloosa for Saturday’s game between Alabama and Georgia has been cast into doubt by the approach of Hurricane Isaias.

The former president had been set to attend the Southeastern Conference meeting at Bryant-Denny Stadium, but said bad weather could disrupt his travel. Trump admitted that he was initially caught off guard by the forecast, telling reporters he had not tracked the brewing storm before deciding he will "let the hurricane decide" whether he makes the trip.

Any high-profile political visit requires extensive security and transport coordination, both of which become difficult in the face of gale-force winds and low visibility. Trump has not formally cancelled the visit, but indicated that final travel plans depend on where the storm tracks over the coming days.

University says game remains on schedule

Despite the worsening forecast, the University of Alabama maintains that the game against Georgia will be played as planned.

Local authorities and event organizers are monitoring the system as it moves across the Gulf of Mexico. Even without a direct hit, the outer bands of the hurricane threaten to bring torrential rain and high winds to western Alabama on Saturday, complicating travel for tens of thousands of travelling supporters.

Broadcasters are already making changes on the ground. Production crews for ESPN's College GameDay, which is broadcasting live from the Tuscaloosa campus ahead of the contest, have put contingency measures in place to handle adverse conditions. Elsewhere in the state, high school fixtures have been moved earlier into the week to avoid the incoming storm front entirely.

Death of former coach Dennis Franchione

The storm preparations come during a sombre week for Alabama football, following the death of former head coach Dennis Franchione on Tuesday.

Franchione led the Crimson Tide programme for two seasons between 2001 and 2002 during a period of NCAA sanctions, guiding the team to ten wins in his second year before departing for Texas A&M. His passing was confirmed by local officials ahead of what was already set to be one of the most scrutinised weekends of the college football season.

Whether Trump joins the crowd in Tuscaloosa will depend entirely on the storm's path over the next forty-eight hours, but university officials insist the players will take the field regardless.
