AFC postpones 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia as regional conflict escalates
The Asian Football Confederation has pushed the tournament to December 2027 following security incidents and logistical disruptions across the region.
Asian Cup moved to late 2027
The Asian Football Confederation has postponed the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia by nearly 11 months, shifting the tournament to run from 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028. The 24-team competition was originally scheduled to take place across eight venues in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khobar between 7 January and 5 February 2027.
The continental governing body said in a statement that the decision was taken "in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions." The organisation added that the revised dates will be presented to FIFA for formal approval.
The postponement follows escalating security incidents across the region. In October, a Houthi missile attack on Riyadh's international airport caused severe casualties, with reports placing the death toll between 12 and 13 people, alongside more than 300 wounded.
Saudi Pro League postpones matchweek fixtures
Following the announcement, the Saudi Pro League postponed Matchweek 13 just two days before matches were set to begin. League officials stated that the pause forms part of a broader review of the domestic schedule, explaining that the revised Asian Cup dates offer flexibility to redistribute fixtures across the rest of the season.
Continental club competitions have also faced disruptions. In the AFC Champions League Elite, Al-Nassr's home match against United Arab Emirates side Al-Wasl was called off after the visiting team did not travel to Riyadh. An earlier fixture involving Al-Nassr and Uzbekistan's Neftchi Fergana was delayed by an hour following a security alert.
Impact on wider sporting calendar
The Asian Cup rescheduling is the latest in a series of cancellations and venue changes affecting major sports events across Saudi Arabia.

Diplomatic efforts to address the wider conflict are ongoing. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on social media platform X that talks between Tehran and Saudi Arabia continue, with the aim of establishing regional security arrangements without foreign military involvement.
