Mexican security forces have arrested Iván 'N', alias 'El Tanque', an alleged co-founder and senior regional operator of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), during an operation in Zapopan, Jalisco.

Omar García Harfuch, the federal secretary for security and civilian protection, announced the arrest on Tuesday, confirming that federal units caught the suspect in the act on Monday, 5 October. Officers seized a vehicle, a firearm and various narcotics during the apprehension.

Federal intelligence services describe El Tanque as a pivotal figure overseeing cartel activities across Veracruz, Oaxaca, Tabasco and Puebla. Mexican authorities link him to homicides, extortion, kidnappings, fuel theft, drug trafficking and money laundering.

The operation and federal tracking

The arrest followed a co-ordinated effort by Mexican army special forces, the security ministry's special operations unit, and the National Guard. Investigators from the National Intelligence Centre (CNI) and the Attorney-General's Criminal Investigation Agency tracked his movements before striking in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

El Tanque is set to appear before prosecutors at the special organised crime unit (FEMDO), where magistrates will decide his legal status.

Mexican officials also connect him to one of the cartel's most notorious confrontations: the May 2015 downing of a Mexican military helicopter in Villa Purificación, Jalisco. Several soldiers and federal police officers died in the rocket attack, which took place during an operation targeting CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho'.

Sanctions and past detentions

El Tanque has surfaced repeatedly on both sides of the border. In September 2024, the United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned him alongside eight individuals and 26 companies. American officials identified him as a core member of El Mencho's inner circle running an extensive fuel-theft and cross-border smuggling network.

His criminal background spans well over a decade. He previously operated as a lieutenant for his brother, César 'N', alias 'El Tornado', who was arrested in July 2013. Iván 'N' himself was detained by federal authorities in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga in November 2015, though he was later released under circumstances that were never publicly explained.

Mexican security records indicate that he resurfaced in Tabasco between 2021 and 2022, forging operational ties with a local criminal syndicate called La Barredora.

Harfuch commended the federal forces and acknowledged operational co-operation with the governors of Jalisco and Veracruz, writing that the operation aimed to restore safety and free movement for local communities.
