Donald Trump Jr and wife confirm Putin ally funded wedding celebrations

Donald Trump Jr and his wife, Bettina, have confirmed that a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin helped fund their wedding celebrations in the Bahamas.

In a statement posted to Instagram, the couple defended the financial support from Umar Kremlev, calling it 'an extraordinarily generous wedding gift' for which they remain grateful.

The admission follows an investigation by ProPublica, which revealed that Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the three-day event in May. According to the report, the Russian businessman paid to rent an exclusive private island for the guests—at a cost of around $100,000 a night—and funded a $70,000 fireworks display.

Kremlev heads the International Boxing Association, a body historically bankrolled by the Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom. He has deep ties to the Kremlin; just days before the wedding celebrations, he travelled to China as part of an official delegation accompanying Putin. Shortly before that, Putin awarded him Russia's Order of Friendship. Ukraine has also placed sanctions on him.

A private ceremony and a crowded party

While the wedding ceremony on 22 May was a tiny affair with only 18 family members present, the subsequent party on a separate island drew about 50 guests, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. President Donald Trump did not attend, telling reporters at the time that his schedule was too busy with geopolitical issues like Iran.

Kremlev did not attend the ceremony but was present at the party along with a delegation of Russian associates. According to ProPublica, the group stood apart from other guests, speaking Russian and causing some confusion among the attendees. The payments for the event reportedly came from an association-affiliated entity based in Dubai.

Growing ethical concerns

The revelations have sparked intense criticism from ethics watchdogs and political opponents, who argue that the financial ties represent a massive conflict of interest.

Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House oversight committee, demanded answers on social media, asking what Kremlev expected to get in return for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on the president's son.

Donald Sherman, head of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said the situation shows why Congress should require financial disclosures from the adult children of presidents. 'We know that private companies and foreign governments have been seeking to gain Don Jr’s favour,' Sherman said. 'It’s important that there is a measure of transparency when folks tied to the Russian government are lavishing the president’s rich adult son with expensive gifts.'

In their joint statement, the couple rejected any suggestion of political influence. 'Friendship doesn’t require a political motive,' they wrote. 'Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.'

A spokesperson for Trump Jr said that the two men are personal friends who met through a mutual contact in the hunting world, and stressed that they share no business relationship.
