India condemns alleged Houthi drone attack near Mecca

India has condemned an alleged drone attack near the holy city of Mecca, warning that targeting a site of such immense religious significance threatens regional stability and civilian lives.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, 15 September 2026, saw Saudi air defences intercept and destroy a drone south of Mecca before it could enter restricted airspace. The Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen blamed the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, calling the security of Islam’s holiest sites a "red line" and describing the launch as a hostile act.

India expresses deep concern

Responding to the incident on Wednesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said New Delhi was "deeply concerned" by the attempted strike.

"India reiterates its condemnation of attacks on the sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and of actions that endanger civilian lives and infrastructure," Jaiswal said. He emphasised that the location of the attack was particularly troubling "given the special significance of the city to Muslims across the world."

The stance aligns with India’s broader position on regional stability and maritime security. Only a day earlier, New Delhi had reiterated its opposition to attacks on shipping and civilian infrastructure in West Asia, noting that such strikes undermine trade and economic stability.

Jaiswal urged a swift de-escalation of tensions and called for the "early restoration of peace and stability in the region."

Houthis reject the accusations

The Houthis quickly denied any involvement in the incident. Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree dismissed the Saudi allegations as "fabrications and lies" designed to mislead the public.

Saree insisted that the group does not target holy sites, stating that Houthi military operations remain strictly focused on Saudi oil facilities and military bases "which are far removed from the sacred sites."

However, Saudi coalition spokesperson Major General Turki al-Malki warned that the joint forces would not hesitate to take deterrent measures to protect pilgrims and holy places. This was only the second time Saudi Arabia has accused the Houthis of targeting Mecca, following a ballistic missile interception in July 2017.

Escalating regional conflict

The drone interception triggered a brief security alert in Mecca on Tuesday, which was stood down after a few minutes. It marks a tense moment in the conflict that has simmered since 2015, when Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen to restore the internationally recognised government ousted by the Houthis.

The incident follows a string of recent attacks. Last week, Houthi strikes on Saudi Aramco energy facilities injured 73 people. Previous Houthi attacks on the country's 1,200-kilometre East-West pipeline have disrupted up to five per cent of the global oil supply.

The rising friction has also drawn diplomatic attention. On 13 September 2026, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, where the two discussed the impact of strikes on regional navigation and trade.
