New embassy operational in San José

India has officially operationalised its new resident diplomatic mission in San José, Costa Rica, expanding the nation's strategic footprint and diplomatic outreach across Central America.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the mission became fully active on 10 October, marking a significant milestone in New Delhi's proactive global diplomacy. The decision underscores India's rising international profile and its commitment to building direct, long-term partnerships with nations across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The establishment of a full resident embassy in San José replaces previous indirect diplomatic arrangements, creating a permanent channel for political consultation and economic cooperation between the two capitals.

Deepening economic and technology partnerships

Bilateral relations between India and Costa Rica have gained continuous momentum in recent years, propelled by shared priorities in trade, technology, and economic growth. The operationalisation of the resident mission is expected to unlock fresh opportunities across key growth sectors.

Key areas targeted for expanded bilateral cooperation include:

  • Information technology: Leveraging India's world-leading tech ecosystem to partner with Costa Rica's growing digital sector.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Enhancing supply chains and exports of high-quality, affordable Indian medicines.
  • Trade and investment: Facilitating direct commercial links and joint investment initiatives.
  • Strategic cooperation: Aligning on global platforms regarding sustainable development and economic resilience.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the resident mission will actively assist Indian enterprises looking to invest in Central America while promoting Costa Rican trade into India's expanding market.

Strengthening consular support and global ties

In addition to driving economic engagement, the new mission will significantly improve administrative support for the Indian diaspora. The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the embassy will deliver streamlined consular services directly to Indian citizens living and working in Costa Rica, ensuring their interests and welfare are effectively safeguarded.

The resident mission will also foster closer people-to-people ties through academic, cultural, and professional exchange programmes. Furthermore, a permanent presence in San José will allow New Delhi to engage more frequently with Costa Rican authorities on regional and multilateral matters, reinforcing India's leadership role across the Global South.
