Marco Rubio to visit India next week for energy and strategic partnership talks
The US secretary of state will travel to Mumbai and Jamnagar to deepen commercial and energy ties following recent discussions between Narendra Modi and Donald Trump.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will arrive in India next week for official talks spanning Mumbai and Jamnagar, with discussions focused on expanding energy cooperation, commercial investments, and strategic ties between New Delhi and Washington.
The visit, scheduled from 17 to 22 October, marks Rubio's second official journey to India this year, following an earlier tour between 23 and 26 May. According to a media note from the US Department of State, Rubio will stop in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, before heading to India to meet senior government representatives and corporate executives.
What Marco Rubio's India visit covers
The itinerary places particular emphasis on critical economic and industrial hubs. By visiting Mumbai, India's financial heart, and Jamnagar in Gujarat—home to the world's largest refining and petrochemical complex—the diplomatic mission underscores Washington's intent to engage directly with India's expanding industrial base.
The State Department confirmed that Rubio will review prospects for enhanced bilateral energy cooperation, exchange assessments on global developments, and meet business leaders to pursue fresh commercial investment.
| Itinerary stop | Primary agenda | Key sector |
|---|---|---|
| Samarkand, Uzbekistan | C5+1 Ministerial meeting with regional leaders | Regional diplomacy and commerce |
| Mumbai, India | Business roundtables and official meetings | Commercial investment and finance |
| Jamnagar, India | Industrial site visits and energy discussions | Petrochemicals and energy security |
Deepening strategic partnership
The diplomatic engagement comes amid rising bilateral momentum between New Delhi and the Trump administration. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed this week that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone earlier in the month, with both administrations preparing for further steps in strategic cooperation.
Speaking in Kolkata at an event marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, Gor highlighted expanding coordination in defence, information technology, and healthcare. The ambassador pointed to joint military drills, the first deployment of US F-35 fighter aircraft to Rajasthan during exercises, and India's vital position as a major supplier of affordable generic pharmaceuticals to the United States.
Central Asian diplomacy before New Delhi arrival
Before landing on Indian soil, Rubio is scheduled to participate in the C5+1 Ministerial meeting in Samarkand alongside foreign ministers from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic.
Rubio will lead a US commercial delegation of more than 200 corporate leaders to Central Asia to explore trade corridors. He will then proceed directly to India to conclude the multi-nation mission.
