Modi's Canada visit confirmed

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Thursday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Canada on 11‑12 December. Carney made the statement at a restaurant in Calgary, saying he had “just spoken” to Modi about the upcoming trip. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa later posted on X that the two leaders had agreed to meet in Toronto and Ottawa, underscoring the momentum in bilateral relations.

Trade ties show double‑digit growth

Data released by Statistics Canada and analysed by the Asia‑Pacific Foundation of Canada show merchandise trade between the two nations accelerating sharply. From January to August 2026, Canadian goods exports to India totalled CA$3.03 billion, a 36.7 % year‑on‑year rise – the sixth‑largest increase among Canada’s 27 principal trading partners. Imports from India during the same period reached CA$7.05 billion, up 10.2 % YoY. In calendar 2025, total Canadian exports to India were CA$3.9 billion and imports CA$9.7 billion.

CEPA negotiations near a deadline

Both governments have pledged to wrap up the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of the year. The deadline was set jointly by Modi and Carney, and five negotiating rounds have already been completed. International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, who led a 300‑strong Team Canada trade mission to India, said the mission secured 34 commercial agreements worth roughly CA$300 million, laying a commercial foundation for the pending CEPA.

What the ministries say

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, who met Modi in New Delhi earlier this week, reiterated the desire to double bilateral trade by 2030 and highlighted cooperation in energy, technology and security. India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal cautioned that “the dates for the visit are presently under discussion” and that an official announcement will come at the appropriate time, reflecting a measured diplomatic cadence.

Looking ahead

If the December visit proceeds as outlined, it will add a high‑profile diplomatic chapter to a year already marked by renewed India‑Canada engagement – from senior ministerial trips to a bustling trade mission. The trip is expected to produce concrete outcomes across sectors and reinforce India’s active role on the global stage, while Canada positions itself as a reliable partner in the Indo‑Pacific.
