Google Cloud launches Gemini agent as a universal assistant for enterprise work
The new universal agent aims to move business AI past simple chatbots by planning tasks, executing them across corporate systems and delivering finished work.

Google Cloud has launched a universal "Gemini agent" designed to act as a comprehensive workplace assistant, marking a significant push to transition corporate AI from simple conversational chatbots into active, autonomous planners.
Announced at the company's Gemini at Work 2026 event on Thursday, the new tool is built to handle complex enterprise workflows directly from a single prompt window. Rather than simply answering questions or drafting text, Google says the agent can plan multi-step projects, select the necessary digital tools, and integrate with a company's internal business databases to return fully completed tasks.
Moving from prompts to planning
The launch represents a shift in how enterprises are expected to interact with generative AI. Instead of bouncing between different specialized models or manually copying data from one application to another, employees can initiate complex projects from a single prompt box.
Google Cloud says the Gemini agent is equipped with an organisation's specific business context. When given a task, the agent determines the best way to execute it, connects to the customer's existing business systems, and carries out the work.
The finished results are delivered directly to the environments where employees already spend their workdays, such as document editors, email inboxes, and developer tools.
Built for corporate control
To address the primary hurdles of deploying AI at scale in large organizations, Google has integrated several administrative controls into the agent:
- Automated model selection: The system automatically chooses the most efficient and cost-effective AI model for each specific task.
- Cost management: Built-in budget and resource controls allow administrators to monitor and limit spending.
- Enterprise-grade governance: The agent operates under the security, administration, and compliance frameworks required by corporate IT departments.
While Google has positioned the Gemini agent as a versatile tool capable of handling knowledge work, content creation, and coding, the company has not yet detailed the specific licensing costs or the exact timeline for its wider deployment to all Google Cloud customers.
