IIT Madras outlines vision for AI workforce and governance

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is preparing to publish a detailed white paper examining the impact of artificial intelligence across employment sectors, while outlining frameworks for reskilling workers and establishing global governance standards.

Speaking on the sidelines of the AI Governance 2026 event, IIT Madras Director Veezhinathan Kamakoti announced that the premier technical institution is partnering with platform Better India to build broad public awareness around AI capabilities. The partnership will produce a series of 500 videos demonstrating practical, real-world applications where AI enhances daily life across different sectors.

Sectoral mapping and reskilling pathways

The upcoming white paper focuses on identifying specific industries likely to experience disruption from automation and establishing structured pathways to help employees move into new roles. By evaluating AI impacts sector by sector, the initiative aims to guide effective retraining programmes and protect job stability across the economy.

To support these efforts and expand national technological infrastructure, IIT Madras is also building large data centres equipped to train complex AI parameters.

Setting common standards for AI governance

Addressing the international dimension of technology deployment, Professor Kamakoti highlighted the need for unified global standards and responsible governance. He noted that in an interconnected digital environment, mistakes made in one region can quickly create widespread repercussions elsewhere.

Through targeted research, infrastructure investment and public outreach, Indian academic institutions are working to ensure that domestic industry and workers are well prepared as artificial intelligence becomes integrated into routine operations.
