TypeSafe AI has raised $870 million in a Series A funding round that values the startup at $7.5 billion, capitalising on the rapid adoption of its non-text AI model, Jev.

The investment, led by Andreessen Horowitz, comes just weeks after Jev's public launch on 15 September. Sequoia Capital and existing investor DCVC also joined the round, with Andreessen Horowitz partner Martin Casado taking a seat on TypeSafe’s board.

What makes TypeSafe’s sudden multi-billion-dollar valuation unusual is that its model does not write essays, generate images, or produce software code. Jev is a transformer-based model, but it is not a large language model. Instead of text, it outputs probabilities—what TypeSafe calls "calibrated decisions."

This focus on decision-making rather than conversation is designed specifically to automate business workflows. TypeSafe claims its approach is significantly faster and uses far fewer tokens than traditional language models, offering a more efficient way for computers to execute tasks.

Co-founder Diogo Almeida, a former OpenAI researcher, recently explained the philosophy behind the model. "We have been super good at human language for four years, but it’s not useful for automation because computers speak a different language," Almeida said to TechCrunch last month.

Corporate clients seem to agree. TypeSafe claims that a third of the Fortune 500 is already using Jev, leading to millions of dollars in production savings. While the startup has not disclosed its exact revenue figures, such rapid interest from large enterprises helped trigger the massive funding round.

Founded in 2024, the startup's leadership team includes Almeida alongside Sasha Sheng, a former Meta research engineer, and entrepreneur Erik Gafni. The company says the new capital will be used to build more machine-native models and add enterprise features requested by its expanding corporate client base.
