Delhi traders have called on Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to postpone the opposition INDIA bloc's planned November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan, warning that political disruptions risk hurting commercial turnover worth ₹10,000 crore during the crucial festive shopping window.

In a formal letter sent to Rahul Gandhi, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) urged the opposition coalition to defer any mass gatherings until after November 10, when major festival celebrations conclude. Delhi's bustling commercial hubs rely on this critical fortnight to drive a substantial portion of their annual consumer demand and wholesale distribution across the country.

Festive trade at risk

CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal noted that Dhanteras falls on November 6, Diwali on November 8, and Bhai Dooj on November 10. Commercial activity traditionally gathers pace a week before the festivities begin, drawing shoppers and wholesale merchants from across north India into the national capital.

Delhi alone generates approximately ₹25,000 crore in economic turnover around Dhanteras across core consumer segments, including gold, silver, consumer electronics, textiles, utensils, sweets, dry fruits, and automobiles. Traders warned that large political assemblies during this period could severely curtail customer footfall and interrupt retail momentum.

Market disruptions and logistical bottlenecks

The traders' body highlighted that roughly 20 major wholesale and retail trading hubs lie within a five-kilometre radius of Ramlila Maidan. These include Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Kashmere Gate, Nai Sarak, Mori Gate, Dariba Kalan, and Karol Bagh.

Because these markets supply consumer goods throughout India, road diversions, police barricades, and potential curbs on public transport could halt freight movements. The trade body also raised concerns regarding buyers arriving via the nearby New Delhi and Old Delhi railway stations, noting that heavy protest congestion could discourage outstation visitors from entering central commercial quarters.

According to CTI's estimates, commercial establishments across central Delhi, Connaught Place, and India Gate have already absorbed losses reaching ₹3,000 crore earlier in October due to repeated marches, demonstrations, and related security closures that choked access to shops.

Commercial priorities over political agitation

While affirming the democratic right to hold peaceful gatherings, CTI stressed that sustaining economic momentum and safeguarding merchant livelihoods requires political parties to avoid staging massive rallies in central commercial corridors during high-volume trading weeks.

The opposition alliance called the November 1 demonstration to protest against the Election Commission over voter roll revisions and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The election authorities have consistently maintained that the Special Intensive Revision is a standard verification process designed to remove duplicate, relocated, or deceased names while ensuring every eligible citizen remains enrolled.

With Delhi's trade fraternity counting on uninterrupted business during the festival surge, representatives maintain that moving political rallies past the festival calendar will keep markets accessible and preserve national economic productivity.
