FMCG Q2 revenue set for double-digit rise on strong domestic demand, but input costs squeeze margins
Stronger rural demand and volume expansion are powering quarterly sales across India's consumer goods sector, even as higher prices for edible oils and sugar trim margins.

India's consumer goods makers are heading into the September quarter earnings season with strong top-line momentum, underpinned by steady domestic consumption and a noticeable pickup in rural demand.
Sector projections point to double-digit revenue expansion across fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies for the second quarter. The gains reflect a healthy mix of volume growth and targeted pricing actions. Yet the bottom line faces a familiar headwind: rising prices for key agricultural and industrial inputs threaten to squeeze gross margins across the board.
What is driving revenue growth across major brands
Consumer demand across both essential and discretionary categories has held firm, helped by expanding distribution networks and quick-commerce channels in urban centres, alongside recovering purchasing power in the countryside.
Packaged food and beverage manufacturers are tracking the fastest gains. Nestle India is projected to report revenue growth of around 20 per cent, driven by confectionery, beverages, and premium product lines. Varun Beverages is similarly expected to top 20 per cent sales growth, supported by capacity additions, expanded distribution, and an extended summer drinking season that bolstered volumes.
Market heavyweight Hindustan Unilever is projected to deliver low double-digit revenue growth, led by its home care and beauty divisions, with personal care and foods holding steady. Biscuit maker Britannia Industries and oral care specialist Colgate-Palmolive India are also on track for double-digit revenue increases, aided by volume growth and premiumisation. Dabur India is anticipated to see steady revenue expansion on the back of resilient domestic demand in personal care and food products.
In home improvement, Asian Paints is expected to record double-digit revenue growth, supported by mid-single-digit decorative volume growth and better pricing realization.
Why input costs are squeezing operating margins
The strong top-line picture contrasts with growing cost pressures on factory floors. Commodity markets have seen prices climb for essential ingredients, notably sugar and edible oils, alongside increases in crude-linked raw materials, packaging supplies, and domestic freight rates.
For companies such as Britannia and Hindustan Unilever, higher prices for food commodities and packaging will test pricing power. While operating leverage and supply chain efficiencies should cushion part of the blow, elevated advertising budgets and employee expenses will leave gross margins compressed compared to earlier quarters.
Decorative paint makers face similar cost inflation in crude derivatives, while agricultural raw material volatility remains an operational challenge for packaged food processors.
Where shareholder returns stand
The earnings season follows an extended period of reliable cash distributions from the sector's largest players, even as equity valuations adjusted over the past year.
Among major consumer stocks, ITC has offered the highest annual dividend yield at 3.63 per cent, after distributing ₹14.50 per share over the past twelve months. Hindustan Unilever paid ₹41 per share, giving an annual yield of 2.25 per cent, while Colgate-Palmolive India distributed ₹48 per share for a yield of 2.16 per cent. Britannia Industries paid ₹90.50 per share, resulting in a 1.54 per cent dividend yield.
As boards report their official quarterly numbers in the coming weeks, market attention will focus on whether improving rural volumes can offset input inflation and keep operating profits intact through the festive season.
