HDFC Bank deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha to step down on December 31
The senior executive's decision comes ahead of Anup Bagchi taking charge as chief executive at India's largest private lender.

Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director of HDFC Bank, has decided to step down from his post on 31 December, marking a major leadership transition at India's largest private sector lender. Bharucha, who joined the bank in 1995, submitted his request to cease service at the close of business hours at the end of the year, the lender said in a regulatory filing on Saturday.
His departure comes shortly after the Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of ICICI Group veteran Anup Bagchi as the bank's next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a three-year term beginning 27 October. Bagchi succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan at the helm.
Succession context and regulatory limits
Bharucha was one of two internal candidates whose names were submitted to the banking regulator for the chief executive position. However, regulatory rules limiting continuous tenures for whole-time directors at commercial banks to 15 years presented a structural constraint. Having served as a whole-time director since June 2014, Bharucha would have reached the 15-year ceiling in June 2029, preventing him from completing a full three-year CEO term without explicit regulatory relaxation.
The bank confirmed that its Group Nomination and Remuneration Committee and board accepted Bharucha's request during meetings on 16 October and 17 October respectively. The decision will now be submitted to the RBI for formal approval.
