HDFC Bank resolves its leadership transition

HDFC Bank has appointed Anup Bagchi as its next managing director and chief executive officer, ending months of speculation over who would lead India's largest private lender.

Bagchi, a veteran of the ICICI Group with more than thirty years of financial sector experience, will take the helm on 27 October 2026 for a three-year term. He succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, who decided not to seek reappointment when his current term ends on 26 October. To ensure a smooth transition, Bagchi joined the HDFC Bank board as an additional director on 2 October.

The market welcomed the clarity. Shares of HDFC Bank rose 2% to hit Rs 734 on the BSE following the announcement. Investors and analysts had been growing uneasy about the leadership succession, which threatened to distract the bank as it continues to digest its massive merger with its parent company.

How brokerages view the appointment

Major brokerages quickly backed the appointment, suggesting that resolving the leadership question opens the door for the bank to reclaim its premium valuation. Jefferies maintained its buy rating with a target price of Rs 880, noting that the Reserve Bank of India’s approval of Bagchi brings needed strategic clarity.

The brokerage pointed out that HDFC Bank's valuation gap with competitors like ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and State Bank of India has widened recently. A smooth transition and potential management reshuffle could trigger a re-rating of the stock from its current level of 1.4 times its estimated fiscal year 2028 adjusted price-to-book value.

Analysts suggest Bagchi's immediate challenge will be execution and deciding on the bank's risk appetite. Jefferies analysts wrote that the bank could expand its profit margins by shifting some of its focus toward higher-yield segments, such as small and medium enterprises, gold loans, and unsecured personal loans.

Citi also maintained a buy rating with a Rs 970 target, emphasising strategic continuity and the ongoing role of deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha. Morgan Stanley kept its overweight rating and a target of Rs 1,025, pointing to solid underlying deposit growth in the bank's latest quarterly numbers.

Strong deposit and loan growth in Q2

The appointment coincided with HDFC Bank’s business update for the quarter ending 30 September 2026, which showed steady expansion. Period-end gross advances rose 16.3% year-on-year to approximately Rs 32.20 lakh crore. Average advances under management reached Rs 31.87 lakh crore for the quarter, up about 14% from Rs 27.95 lakh crore in the same period last year.

On the deposit side, average deposits grew by 16.8% to Rs 31.67 lakh crore. While Morgan Stanley noted that underlying loan growth of 14.3% (excluding temporary transit loans) lagged slightly behind the broader banking system, underlying deposit growth remained robust at around 15% year-on-year.

The bank's low-cost current and savings accounts (CASA) showed sequential improvement, with average CASA deposits rising 10.7% year-on-year to Rs 9.71 lakh crore.

With the leadership transition now settled, Bagchi will be expected to leverage his retail and insurance background to drive cross-selling and steady the bank's performance.
