Major production updates released ahead of market reopening

Shares in Vedanta group companies are set to be in focus on Monday, 5 October, as trading resumes after the Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti holiday. Over the weekend, several of the group's key units, including Hindustan Zinc, Vedanta Power, and Vedanta Aluminium, released their production and sales updates for the second quarter ended 30 September 2026.

The figures show strong gains in metals and power generation, offset by some declines in the group's oil and iron ore operations.

Hindustan Zinc hits record refined metal output

Hindustan Zinc, a key Vedanta group firm, reported a 5% year-on-year rise in mined metal production to 271,000 tonnes for the July-to-September quarter, supported by higher ore production.

The company also achieved record second-quarter refined metal production, which rose 7% to 264,000 tonnes. This growth was driven by debottlenecking projects that unlocked extra capacity at the Chanderiya and Dariba plants, alongside the 160,000-tonne-per-annum roaster at Debari. Refined zinc production climbed 5% to 212,000 tonnes, while refined lead output increased 14% to 51,000 tonnes.

Silver production, a key high-value contributor, grew 20% to 173 tonnes during the quarter. Wind power generation also rose 17% to 155 million units, in line with weather patterns.

For the first half of the fiscal year, Hindustan Zinc recorded its sixth consecutive year of record mined metal production at 539,000 tonnes, up 3% year-on-year. Refined metal output for the first half rose 6% to 524,000 tonnes, which the company said was its highest-ever first-half figure.

Vedanta Power sales surge 26%

Vedanta Power registered a 26% year-on-year jump in power sales to 5,593 million units during the second quarter, up from 4,433 million units in the same period last year. For the first half of the fiscal year, sales reached 10,817 million units, representing a 32% growth.

The company attributed the gains to improved plant availability and stronger performance across its portfolio. This was highlighted by a turnaround at the Jharsuguda Thermal Plant and a massive 111% surge in sales at Meenakshi Energy to 1,470 million units, following the expansion of its capacity base to 1,000 MW.

Records for aluminium, but oil and iron ore dip

Vedanta Aluminium posted its highest-ever quarterly aluminium production at 649,000 tonnes. Its alumina production also surged 37% to 895,000 tonnes as its expanded circuit began to stabilise.

However, performance was mixed across other divisions. Vedanta Oil and Gas reported a 19% decline in average daily gross operated production to 72,200 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with daily working interest production down 18% to 47,800 barrels.

Vedanta Iron and Steel saw overall saleable ore production fall 13% to 5.2 million dry metric tonnes. While output from its Goa and Odisha mines grew by 22% and 34% respectively, a 49% drop in production at its Karnataka mines—aligned with a revised mine plan—dragged down the overall segment.
