India’s strong domestic demand and prudent economic management continue to position the country as a major engine of global growth, with the World Bank projecting a robust 7.1% expansion for financial year 2027.

The forecast was highlighted during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Bangkok, where policymakers and finance leaders gathered to assess global economic prospects. While global growth remains constrained at a projected 3.1% for 2026 due to geopolitical tensions, energy volatility, and high public debt, India’s economic trajectory stands out as a model of resilience and stability.

Growth outlook and economic performance

The contrast between global economic deceleration and India’s sustained momentum was a key theme during the discussions in Bangkok.

Delegates emphasized that long-term resilience requires transforming strong macroeconomic indicators into tangible social and economic development. India’s strategic focus on targeted public capital expenditure, modern infrastructure, and domestic market capacity has provided a crucial buffer against external global shocks.

Employment generation and MSME development

Employment creation emerged as a central topic during the multilateral discussions. World Bank leadership noted that over the next decade to 15 years, roughly 1.2 billion young people across developing nations will reach working age, while current macroeconomic trends indicate only about 400 million jobs will be generated globally.

To maintain productive growth, India has prioritised job creation in key sectors such as labor-intensive manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, tourism, and modern services. Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) remain vital to this effort. Enhancing credit access, simplifying regulatory frameworks, and integrating small businesses into global value chains are central components of India's ongoing economic strategy.

Technology, AI, and digital governance

India was frequently featured alongside the United States and China during high-level panels on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation. Deliberations focused on applying AI solutions to enhance productivity in agriculture, primary healthcare, education, and small business operations.

The meetings highlighted the role of digital footprint as collateral, enabling formal credit access for micro-enterprises and individuals lacking physical assets through India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Additionally, the unveiling of the Bangkok Blueprint for Fraud Resilient Financial Services recognized digital fraud as a systemic risk requiring international regulatory collaboration.

Fiscal discipline and future outlook

The proceedings reinforced the importance of disciplined monetary policy and targeted fiscal allocation. India’s policy of prioritizing long-term capital expenditure over unfocused subsidies has strengthened its economic fundamentals while keeping inflation under control.

Ravi Duvvuru, a member of the Reserve Bank of India’s advisory group on regulations who attended the meetings, observed that converting policy insights into measurable outcomes will determine long-term success. With strong institutions, disciplined governance, and sustained structural reforms, India remains exceptionally well-positioned to navigate global economic uncertainties.
