Indian Railways expands network with new Yeshwantpur to Goa Vande Bharat Express
The extended chair car service will link Karnataka's tech hub with coastal Goa through challenging terrain in the Western Ghats.
Indian Railways is expanding its premium Vande Bharat fleet with the upcoming launch of the extended Yeshwantpur-Madgaon-Yeshwantpur Vande Bharat Express, providing direct semi-high-speed connectivity between Karnataka's tech capital and the coastal state of Goa.
The new service (Train No. 26655/656) marks a significant step in regional infrastructure delivery, connecting Bengaluru's commercial hub with coastal commerce and tourism corridors. Traveling from Yeshwantpur to Madgaon, the service will take 12 hours and 20 minutes, while the return journey from Madgaon to Yeshwantpur will take 12 hours and 55 minutes. The route becomes the longest-duration Vande Bharat chair car service among the 82 pairs currently operating across the national network.
Network terrain and route specifications
The extended line operates across complex geography along Karnataka's Western Ghats. Rail operations through the 50-kilometre Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road Ghat section require all trains to maintain a mandatory safety speed cap of 30 kilometres per hour.
Except for short double-line segments—approximately 16 kilometres between Mangaluru Junction and Thokur and 8 kilometres between Yeshwantpur and Chikkabanavara—the route relies on a single-line track. Managing these single-line sections requires built-in operational slack time for train crossings to maintain network safety and reliability.
| Train Route | Distance | Travel Time (One Way) | Average Speed | Rakes Used |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yeshwantpur-Madgaon | Not disclosed | 12h 20m / 12h 55m | 53–54 km/h | 2 |
| Pune-Ajni (Nagpur) | 882 km | 12h 00m | 73 km/h | 2 |
| Varanasi-Meerut | 783 km | 11h 50m / 11h 55m | 66 km/h | 2 |
| Varanasi-New Delhi | 759 km | 8h 00m | 95 km/h | 1 |
Fleet deployment and operations
The down direction from Yeshwantpur will run at an average speed of 54 kilometres per hour, while the up service from Madgaon will average 53 kilometres per hour. Standard Mail and Express services on the national network average between 50 and 54 kilometres per hour, while trains averaging over 55 kilometres per hour are classified as Superfast Expresses. Indian Railways has not stated whether superfast passenger tariffs will apply to the Yeshwantpur-Madgaon service.
To maintain regular departure schedules across the extended distance, Indian Railways will deploy two dedicated rakes for the route. This puts the service alongside a select group of long-distance Vande Bharat corridors—including Pune-Ajni, Tatanagar-Brahmapur, and Varanasi-Meerut—that require two train sets rather than a single rake running back and forth.
