Jio Platforms is shifting its operational focus from building out physical telecom networks to wringing returns from the infrastructure it already runs, Managing Director Akash Ambani has confirmed ahead of the company's ₹30,213 crore initial public offering.

The public issue, running from 21 October to 23 October, consists entirely of 27 crore fresh shares priced between ₹1,065 and ₹1,119 each. At the upper band, the business is valued at roughly ₹10.3 lakh crore. Up to ₹27,500 crore raised from the listing will pay down borrowings at its flagship operating unit, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, cleaning up debt as it transitions into an AI-driven technology business.

Shifting gears from heavy spending to cash flow

For nearly a decade, India's digital revolution has been underpinned by massive domestic capital expenditure. Jio built a base covering more than 99% of the population with wireless broadband, running over 360,000 fibre-linked towers and a million route kilometres of glass. As of June 2026, the operator served 533.3 million customers and carried nearly 60% of India's wireless data traffic.

Now, with pan-India 5G deployment largely in place, spending is tapering sharply. Cash capital expenditure dropped to ₹34,184 crore in FY26, down from ₹53,510 crore two years earlier. Network-specific spending saw an identical descent, leaving the platform with widening operational margins.

"Our capital allocation will be guided by the objective of creating sustainable long-term value," Ambani said. "Over the medium and longer term, the focus will be on extracting greater value from the infrastructure already built."

The technology pitch to public markets

The central proposition facing incoming investors is whether Jio can successfully transition from being India's dominant digital utility into a higher-margin software and cloud giant. In FY26, telecom connectivity still accounted for 87.7% of consolidated revenues and nearly 95% of EBITDA.

Yet the groundwork for an indigenous tech ecosystem is substantial. Around 45% of Jio's permanent staff—12,477 employees—now works on proprietary software and digital architecture. The group has filed 7,220 patents covering cloud-native radio access, 5G core systems, and network automation.

"Connectivity was the first product we built on that platform. Digital services, AI and cloud are what we are layering on top of it now," Ambani said, pointing to headroom at home. Roughly 26 crore citizens remain on legacy 2G networks, while fewer than 3% of India's 7.9 crore small businesses have adopted enterprise digital tools.

Beyond domestic expansion, Jio is testing international deployments for its homegrown 5G stack, building satellite broadband partnerships, and tying up with global leaders including Google and Meta to deliver enterprise AI solutions natively across Indian industry.
