Net FDI in India surges to $3.3 billion as foreign investor confidence holds firm
Strong gross inflows and moderating outward investments drive a 44 per cent year-on-year surge in net foreign direct investment between April and August.

Strong foreign direct investment inflows drive growth
India's foreign direct investment trajectory continued its upward climb in August 2026, with net FDI inflows reaching $3.3 billion to register a third straight month of positive growth. The strong reading highlights foreign investors' sustained trust in India's macroeconomic stability and expanding industrial capacity.
According to data published in the Reserve Bank of India's monthly Bulletin, the robust performance in August brought total net FDI inflows for the April to August 2026 period to $13.8 billion. That represents a 44 per cent increase compared to the $9.6 billion recorded during the same five-month period in the previous financial year.
Net FDI, which measures the difference between foreign direct capital entering the country and investments sent abroad by domestic companies, remained positive in seven of the past eight months. This sustained momentum reflects a decisive turnaround, buoyed by expanding domestic production and key national policy initiatives aimed at strengthening manufacturing and digital infrastructure.
Key sectors and source markets power investment
Gross FDI entering India in August stood at $11.1 billion, nearly 68 per cent higher than in August 2025. Direct investments were heavily concentrated in high-value services and manufacturing, reflecting growing international participation in India's economic growth story.
The RBI reported that communication services, miscellaneous services, and manufacturing received over two-thirds of gross inflows in August. Looking across the wider April to August period, four key sectors—financial services, communication services, computer services, and manufacturing—accounted for 73 per cent of total FDI equity inflows.
| Indicator | Apr–Aug 2025 | Apr–Aug 2026 | Year-on-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net FDI inflows | $9.6 billion | $13.8 billion | +44% |
| August gross FDI inflows | $6.6 billion | $11.1 billion | +68% |

Investments into India during August were led by major global financial hubs and strategic economic partners. The United States, Singapore, and Mauritius together accounted for roughly 72 per cent of total gross inflows for the month, while Japan and the United Arab Emirates were also among the primary sources over the five-month span.
Outward capital moderates while reserves strengthen
The expansion in net FDI was further supported by a moderation in outward direct investment by domestic firms. Outward FDI fell to $1.9 billion in August, down 43 per cent from July 2026 and 11 per cent lower than in August last year. More than half of these outward investments were directed towards Singapore, the Netherlands, and the United States, primarily targeting manufacturing, financial services, agriculture, and mining.
Personal remittances into India also rose sharply to $5.8 billion in August, up nearly 52 per cent from July and 28 per cent higher than the same month last year.
Alongside direct investment, the Reserve Bank of India strengthened its liquidity and foreign exchange buffers significantly during the month. The central bank purchased a net $43.26 billion in foreign currency in August, more than doubling its net purchases of $18.65 billion in July, supported by steady non-resident Indian deposit inflows and resilient domestic economic momentum.
