Reliance Industries poised for ₹12,600 crore gain as Venezuelan crude and Jio IPO align
Cheaper heavy crude imports at Jamnagar and an impending digital market listing bolster India's leading energy and tech conglomerate.

Venezuelan crude imports strengthen Jamnagar refinery margins
Reliance Industries (RIL) is set to generate up to ₹12,600 crore in additional annual operating profit as heavy Venezuelan crude imports return to its flagship Jamnagar refining complex at scale. Brokerage firm YES Securities estimates that the resumption of these discounted cargoes, alongside the full optimisation of Jamnagar’s advanced deep-conversion facilities, could add between $2 and $3 a barrel to the company's gross refining margin.
Jamnagar, the world's largest single-location refining hub, was specifically engineered to process extra-heavy sour grades such as Venezuela's Merey-16 crude. With an API gravity of around 16 degrees, this feedstock carries high concentrations of sulphur and metals, making it unsuitable for less complex refineries. RIL’s delayed coking units, high-pressure hydrocrackers, and petcoke gasification complex enable it to transform these discounted heavy barrels into high-value middle distillates without producing low-value fuel oil, giving the company a distinct structural cost advantage.
Indian imports of Venezuelan crude have recovered to between 250,000 and 465,000 barrels per day following the reopening of international trading channels. RIL's own intake has risen to between 250,000 and 420,000 barrels per day so far in 2026, sourced primarily through licensed global trading firms. Analyst estimates indicate that every $1 per barrel expansion in RIL's gross refining margin delivers approximately ₹4,200 crore in annualised operating profit before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA).
The return of Venezuelan barrels comes at a crucial moment as discounts on alternative heavy grades, such as Russian Urals, have begun to narrow. During previous peak import cycles, RIL’s gross refining margin outperformed domestic public sector refiners by a margin ranging from $3.08 to $7.10 a barrel. While US sanctions temporarily disrupted these flows between 2021 and 2023, the current intake allows RIL to re-establish a sustainable structural margin premium of around $3 a barrel over domestic peers.
Jio Platforms IPO prepares for value unlocking
Alongside its refining advantage, Reliance Industries is preparing for a landmark value unlocking event through the initial public offering of Jio Platforms. According to a report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the planned listing could value the telecom and digital services arm at approximately ₹11 lakh crore, with an expected fundraise of around ₹30,200 crore.
Led by Akash Ambani, Jio Platforms encompasses RIL's digital and telecommunications operations, including 5G connectivity, enterprise technology, cloud services, and artificial intelligence initiatives. The company plans to deploy up to ₹27,500 crore of the net proceeds towards paying down debt at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, strengthening its balance sheet for future infrastructure expansion.
Beyond energy and telecom, Motilal Oswal highlights that RIL holds multiple growth catalysts, including the expansion of quick-commerce under Reliance Retail, higher petrochemical spreads, and long-term optionality in FMCG, data centres, and green energy technology. YES Securities maintains a buy rating on RIL with a target price of ₹1,660, representing a potential upside of nearly 42 per cent and underscoring the strong fundamentals driving India's key industrial assets.
