Indian benchmark indices traded lower on Wednesday as elevated international crude oil prices and global inflation worries prompted investors to lock in profits, following a sharp run-up in the previous session.

The BSE Sensex declined 208.30 points, or 0.29%, to trade at 72,825.48 in afternoon trade, having slid as much as 269.75 points earlier in the day. The broader NSE Nifty 50 slipped 90.80 points, or 0.40%, to 22,631.15, dropping below the 22,700 mark after touching an intraday low of 22,616.80.

Wednesday’s mild pullback comes directly after a surge on Tuesday, when the Sensex climbed 1,109.10 points and the Nifty added 358.60 points, driven by strong corporate earnings from major technology exporters.

What moved the market

Energy costs were the primary source of caution across Mumbai trading floors. Brent crude futures held above $106 a barrel, climbing nearly 1% on supply disruption risks in the Middle East, while West Texas Intermediate hovered near $95. For India, which relies heavily on imported energy, persistent oil spikes renew pressure on the trade balance and domestic inflation projections.

Investors also took a wait-and-see approach ahead of key US consumer price index figures, which will guide the Federal Reserve's future interest rate decisions.

Gainers and laggards

Weakness was heavily concentrated in financials and public-sector lenders. The Nifty PSU Bank index recorded the sharpest sectoral decline of the day, with Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and HDFC Life among the primary laggards.

Conversely, large information technology firms cushioned the benchmark against a steeper drop. Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra advanced, extending gains following strong quarterly earnings updates. Industrial heavyweight Larsen & Toubro and Sun Pharma also drifted lower.

Domestic resilience underpins stability

Despite the session's losses, the broader market showed resilience, supported by solid local participation. Exchange figures showed domestic institutional investors bought a net Rs 2,439.24 crore of equities in the prior session, comfortably absorbing foreign institutional outflows of Rs 1,305.13 crore.

India's capital markets infrastructure continues to see active corporate issuance alongside secondary market trading. Primary offerings from Fusion CX and Ravita Engineering Services opened for bidding on Wednesday, while HD Fire Protect and Vaibhav Vyapaar entered their second day of public subscription.
