SGX shares tumble 19% since August high

Singapore Exchange Ltd (SGX) opened lower on Monday, extending a slide that has taken the stock down about 19% from its record on 26 August. The decline erased roughly US$4.2 billion of market capitalisation, making SGX the worst‑performing component of the Straits Times Index (STI) over the same period.

Analysts turn more cautious

Citigroup’s October 2 note put SGX on a 90‑day “negative catalyst watch,” kept a sell rating and lowered its price target to S$17.70 a share – a level that implies almost a 16% drop from the Friday close. Citi’s analyst Yong Hong Tan warned that the exchange’s earnings could be hit by weaker iron‑ore trading, which would dent fee income from derivatives.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. downgraded SGX to a neutral stance last week, and Macquarie reduced its recommendation to underperform in mid‑September. All three houses cited the exchange’s lofty valuation as a primary concern.

Valuation now looks stretched

At the time of writing, SGX trades at almost 26 times its 12‑month forward earnings estimate. That is well above the ten‑year average multiple of 22 times and considerably higher than the STI benchmark’s typical 16‑times forward earnings multiple. The gap suggests investors are paying a premium that analysts now view as unjustified given the concentration of trading volume in a handful of large banks and the broader volatility in the global banking sector.

What the numbers mean for investors

Citi’s revised target of S$17.70 translates to a potential downside of about 16% from the recent close, while the stock’s intra‑day dip on Monday reached 2.1% after a more than 7% fall the previous session. If the forward‑P/E premium persists, further price pressure could follow, especially if the iron‑ore market remains sluggish or if the STI experiences renewed stress from the banking sector.

Outlook

The consensus among the three major banks is that SGX’s valuation needs to come down to more historical levels before the share price can stabilise. Until then, the exchange is likely to remain on analysts’ watchlists, with the possibility of additional rating cuts if earnings estimates are further revised.
