Indian stock markets adjust as midcap and smallcap indices fall up to 4 percent
Strong domestic corporate earnings projections offer long-term stability as analysts point to strategic value buying in large-cap stocks.

Indian equity markets experienced a broad-based price alignment on Friday, 23 October, as profit-taking in high-flying broader market stocks pushed midcap and smallcap indices down by up to 4 per cent.
While benchmark indices like the Sensex and Nifty 50 pulled back by up to 1.4 per cent, the correction was more pronounced in the broader space, where rapid liquidity-driven rallies over recent months had elevated valuation multiples. Despite temporary volatility spurred by external international factors—including high global bond yields, elevated crude oil prices, and geopolitical friction overseas—analysts point to solid underlying domestic corporate earnings as a strong anchor for long-term investors.
How key indices performed across segments
The BSE 150 Midcap index declined 3.2 per cent, while the BSE 250 SmallCap index contracted 3.6 per cent. In the Nifty series, the Nifty Smallcap 250 touched a session low of 16,237, down 4 per cent on the day and marking a 7.5 per cent weekly decline—its largest weekly adjustment in 20 months. Similarly, the Nifty Midcap 100 eased 3 per cent to 55,421.
| Index | Daily Change | Key Session Level |
|---|---|---|
| BSE 150 Midcap | -3.2% | Midcap segment |
| BSE 250 SmallCap | -3.6% | Smallcap segment |
| Nifty Smallcap 250 | -4.0% | 16,237 |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | -3.0% | 55,421 |
| Sensex / Nifty 50 | -1.4% | Benchmark segment |
Individual stocks across emerging sectors witnessed price realignments. Top drags on the midcap indices included Swiggy, BHEL, One 97 Communications, Havells, and Motilal Oswal Financial Services. In the smallcap space, pressure was felt in shares of Delhivery, Urban Company, Himadri Speciality Chemical, and CreditAccess Grameen, with at least 15 smallcap counters touching 52-week lows during trade.
Strong fundamentals support long-term outlook
Market experts emphasize that the current pullback reflects a healthy repricing process rather than structural weakness in the national economic expansion story. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that while broader market valuations driven primarily by short-term liquidity were overdue for a breather, well-capitalised large-cap equities with solid underlying growth now present attractive value buying opportunities for patient investors.
Furthermore, domestic earnings expansion remains on a firm footing. Atul Bhole, executive vice-president and fund manager at Kotak Mahindra AMC, pointed out that the aggregate earnings growth outlook for the midcap and smallcap universe remains strong at 16 to 20 per cent. Analysts expect that any moderation in global crude prices or stabilizing bond yields will quickly pave the way for a swift relief rally, supported by India's robust macroeconomic framework and sustained institutional inflows.
