Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have shot and killed two suspected Pakistani intruders along the international border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district.

The incident occurred at around noon on Friday, 2 October, near the BSF's Rajoke post in the Khalra sector, an area close to the zero line.

According to border officials, patrolling troops spotted suspicious movement near the border fence and watched as the two men attempted to cross over into Indian territory. BSF personnel challenged the intruders, shouting repeated warnings for them to halt and turn back.

However, the men ignored the warnings and continued their advance towards the Indian side. Officials said the troops, perceiving a threat to their safety, opened fire. Both men were killed in the ensuing shooting.

The identities of the two suspected intruders have not yet been established. Following the confrontation, the BSF contacted the Punjab Police, who took custody of the bodies to conduct a post-mortem examination. Further investigations are underway, with the border force and local police carrying out joint procedures at the site.

A meeting between the BSF and the Pakistan Rangers is expected to be scheduled shortly to address the incident and the breach of the border.

Security along the Punjab border

The encounter highlights the persistent security challenges along India's western frontier. Punjab shares a 553-kilometre international border with Pakistan, a vast stretch that is heavily fortified with barbed-wire fencing and monitored by round-the-clock foot patrols.

Tarn Taran district has historically been a key transit point for cross-border smuggling, particularly of narcotics and weapons transported via drones or manual infiltration. This has prompted the BSF to increase its deployment and surveillance capabilities in the region.

Despite these security measures, the frontier remains a highly active zone. BSF troops frequently detect attempts to breach the border, and security forces maintain a high state of vigilance along the entire stretch to counter these crossing attempts.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether any weapons, contraband, or communication devices were recovered from the bodies of the two men. Security forces have also not indicated whether the intruders were armed.

The area near the Rajoke post has been cordoned off as security personnel conduct search operations to ensure no other individuals or packages remain hidden in the fields near the border.
