Donald Trump has announced what he described as an immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, claiming both countries have agreed to halt attacks on fuel and power infrastructure.

Writing on Truth Social, the US President declared that the arrangement was effective immediately and urged both nations to abide by it. "Both parties have agreed. Do not break it! Thank you for your attention to this matter," Trump posted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy swiftly pushed back on the assertion that a formal deal had been finalised, stating that the announcement was news to him. However, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine remains open to the concept provided Russia reciprocates.

Writing on X, Zelenskyy said Kyiv would be prepared to stop drone strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow ended its campaign of missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian power grids and energy systems.

"It is possible to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as early as today, but Putin does not want to do so," Zelenskyy said, stressing that any halt to military action against energy targets would require verified, mutual guarantees.

Refineries and political friction

The announcement comes after weeks of public tension over Ukraine's deep-strike campaign against Russian oil infrastructure. Trump had previously criticized Kyiv for targeting Russian refineries, arguing that damaging diesel production creates wider economic problems globally.

In earlier comments, Trump suggested that Ukraine should seek new leadership capable of negotiating an end to the war, blaming Kyiv for continuing strikes on Russian energy targets.

Trump also announced that the US had negotiated an arrangement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to purchase Russian diesel, aiming to lower domestic fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. US Treasury officials defended the step, citing legal authority to secure energy supplies.

Neither the Kremlin nor Russian defense officials have released an official statement confirming the energy ceasefire claimed by Trump.
