Delhi AQI rises to 216 as dry weather and seasonal shifts worsen air quality
Environmental authorities monitor air quality closely as dry weather and light winds push Delhi's pollution reading into the poor category.

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated sharply on Saturday as dry weather and changing seasonal conditions pushed pollution levels back into the poor category across the national capital region.
Data from air monitoring platforms showed the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 216 at 10:31 am on 17 October. The sharp rise came just two days after a brief spell of rain and strong winds temporarily cleared the skies and brought the index down to a low of 65 on 15 October. Under the Central Pollution Control Board scale, an AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as Poor.
Civic authorities and environmental agencies responded by deploying mobile water sprinklers and anti-smog guns along main road corridors to control dust and limit particulate accumulation.
Weather forecasts indicate persistent dry conditions
The India Meteorological Department reported that clear skies will prevail over Delhi, with no rainfall expected through at least 23 October. Maximum temperatures are predicted to hover between 31°C and 33°C over the weekend before rising by 2°C to 3°C next week.
Without rain to wash fine particles out of the air, pollutants generated from everyday vehicular emissions, construction activity, and regional crop residue burning are likely to accumulate closer to the ground.
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology stated in its air quality bulletin that Delhi's air quality is projected to stay within the Poor range from 19 October across its six-day outlook period.
| AQI Category | Scale Range | Delhi Status | Primary Drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good | 0–50 | Not recorded | Rain, strong winds |
| Satisfactory | 51–100 | Recorded on 15 Oct (65 AQI) | Post-shower clearing |
| Moderate | 101–200 | Recorded on 16 Oct (158 AQI) | Transitioning weather |
| Poor | 201–300 | Recorded on 17 Oct (216 AQI) | Dry air, light winds |
As atmospheric conditions shift toward winter, municipal agencies are maintaining close surveillance across key pollution hotspots to ensure mitigation measures are actively executed.
