Ganga Canal closes until 8 November for annual maintenance as NCR steps up utility management
The Uttar Pradesh irrigation department has begun routine desilting and repairs along the 560-kilometre canal network while NCR agencies align water and air quality operations.

Authorities across Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region have set seasonal maintenance plans in motion following the scheduled closure of the Ganga Canal until midnight on 8 November. The planned shutdown allows engineers to carry out essential desilting, structural upkeep, and ghat redevelopment across the 560-kilometre network before the winter crop cycle begins.
The routine procedure, approved by the Uttar Pradesh government, closed the gates from Tuesday midnight until Deepawali. The operation temporarily reduces raw water reaching the Pratap Vihar treatment plant in Ghaziabad, which supplies drinking water across parts of Noida and neighbouring NCR localities, alongside irrigation networks spanning 15 districts in Uttar Pradesh, Haridwar in Uttarakhand, and seven districts across the wider capital region.
Coordinated maintenance and local arrangements
The historic canal, built in 1854 to carry water from Haridwar down to Kanpur, remains under the management of the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department. Officials confirmed that stakeholders and municipal agencies were notified well before the gates closed to allow municipal water utilities to tap alternative reserves, tubewells, and storage tanks.
Sub-divisional officer Bharat Bhushan said the annual closure is a necessary technical requirement to clear silt deposits and preserve the long-term hydraulic capacity of the canal bed. Field officers have also been directed to maintain dedicated supply levels at Brahmakund at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, following appeals by Ganga Sabha president Nitin Gautam to safeguard continuous flows for daily pilgrim rituals.
| Area or Facility | Primary Role | Status During Maintenance Period |
|---|---|---|
| Pratap Vihar Plant | NCR drinking water supply | Operating on backup and local storage |
| Har Ki Pauri | Religious bathing and rituals | Minimum mandated flow monitored |
| 15 UP Districts | Agricultural irrigation | Canals drained for bed desilting |
| 560-km Canal Trunk | Regional water distribution | Comprehensive repair and ghat upgrades |
Broader NCR infrastructure controls
The canal maintenance coincides with coordinated winter readiness measures across the capital region. With dry conditions and dropping wind speeds pushing Delhi’s Air Quality Index from 179 on 20 October to 244 by the afternoon of 21 October, the Commission for Air Quality Management invoked Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan.
The proactive enforcement of Stage-I sets 25 statutory municipal actions across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Municipal teams have intensified mechanized road sweeping, augmented water sprinkling to suppress dust, and deployed surveillance squads at construction and demolition sites.
Transport monitoring has also stepped up at state borders. Interstate buses entering the NCR from neighbouring states must now be electric, powered by compressed natural gas, or compliant with BS-VI diesel standards. Commercial eateries face strict inspections ensuring they rely on electricity or clean gas rather than coal and firewood tandoors, reinforcing administrative efforts to preserve baseline environmental standards as seasonal infrastructure work proceeds.
