Health officials in Jersey are urging elderly and vulnerable islanders to book their free winter vaccinations as GP surgeries prepare to roll out protection against flu, Covid-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The campaign is designed to build up community immunity before winter arrives, a period when respiratory illnesses traditionally surge and place heavy demands on Jersey's healthcare system.

While annual flu and Covid boosters are familiar routines for many, public health teams are putting a particular focus on RSV this year. RSV is a highly contagious virus that typically causes mild, cold-like symptoms such as coughs and runny noses. However, for older people and those with underlying health issues, it can develop into severe lung infections like pneumonia, occasionally requiring hospital treatment.

Who can get the free RSV vaccine?

The government has outlined specific criteria for those eligible to receive the free RSV jab. The offer is open to all islanders aged 75 and over, as well as people aged between 65 and 74 who have weakened immune systems or live with long-term lung conditions.

Pregnant women are also being urged to get the vaccine, which helps pass on vital protection to their babies in the first few months of life. Additionally, the programme covers all residents living in Jersey care homes, where viruses can spread quickly through close-knit communities.

Why health officials want you to act early

Unlike some emergency medical treatments, vaccines do not offer instant protection. It takes time for the body to build up the necessary antibodies after receiving a shot.

Andrea Sanabria, Jersey's interim director of public health, said getting vaccinated early in the autumn is the most effective way to prepare for the colder months.

"Getting vaccinated as early as possible in the season will help ensure you have the best possible protection over the winter months," Sanabria said. She added that the three vaccines are the "best way" of securing protection from serious illnesses that could otherwise lead to hospitalisation.

By tackling Covid-19, flu, and RSV simultaneously, health officials hope to prevent a "tripledemic"—a scenario where all three viruses peak at the same time, potentially overwhelming GP clinics and hospital wards. Eligible residents are being advised to contact their local doctors' surgeries directly to check availability and schedule their appointments before the winter virus season peaks.
