Osmania General Hospital introduces dedicated gender-affirming surgical services in Hyderabad
The landmark public hospital unit provides comprehensive, affordable surgical care for transgender individuals in Telangana.

Dedicated public unit for gender-affirming care
Hyderabad's Osmania General Hospital has launched a dedicated gender-affirming surgical service within Telangana's public healthcare network, offering specialized procedures to transgender individuals who previously faced financial and logistical barriers.
Developed over the past eight months, the service is managed by the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. It unites a multidisciplinary team comprising plastic surgeons, anaesthetists, endocrinologists, urologists, gynaecologists and psychiatrists, together with dedicated nursing staff.
Advanced procedures and state welfare support
The surgical team has already completed several gender-affirming operations. To ensure affordability, specialized equipment such as breast implants are facilitated through letters of credit under the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
| Procedure | Surgical focus |
|---|---|
| Frontal bossing reduction | Facial contouring and reshaping |
| Breast augmentation | Autologous fat grafting and implant procedures |
| Penile inversion vaginoplasty | Feminising genital reconstruction |
| Mastectomy | Bilateral nipple-areola complex-sparing chest surgery |
Dr P. Lakshmi, Professor and Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, noted that patient recovery facilities have also been upgraded. The hospital renovated a three-bed recovery ward specifically for transgender patients following surgery, with support from Mukunda Mala, president of the Queer Badhu Parents Association.
Strengthening Telangana's public health delivery
Every patient admitted under the programme receives individualized assessment, structured surgical planning, perioperative care and long-term post-operative monitoring.
Osmania General Hospital plans to further broaden the range of gender-affirming surgeries available. By embedding these specialized procedures into the state public health infrastructure, the institution is reinforcing Telangana's broader efforts to deliver dignified, inclusive and accessible healthcare for every section of society.
