Assam Police will approach the Supreme Court to challenge the Gauhati High Court's orders granting bail to two accused in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg.

Special Director General of Police for CID and SIT chief Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that state authorities have thoroughly analysed the high court orders and obtained legal counsel to move the apex court as soon as the ongoing court holidays conclude.

The state's legal challenge follows bail granted by the Gauhati High Court to co-singer Amritprava Mahanta on 9 October and suspended Assam Police Deputy Superintendent Sandipon Garg on 16 October. Assam Police remain committed to ensuring full accountability in the death of the celebrated singer-songwriter, who died in Singapore on 19 September 2025.

Alongside the police appeal, Morigaon-based lawyer Ratul Bora, who filed the initial complaint following Garg's death, also announced plans to petition the Supreme Court against the bail orders.

Swift progress in fast-track court

The comprehensive state investigation began after more than 60 complaints were registered across Assam. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) consolidated these cases and filed a detailed charge sheet in December 2025 naming seven accused, four of whom face murder charges.

State investigators emphasised that the trial before a special fast-track sessions court in Guwahati is advancing rapidly on a day-to-day basis.

Gupta said that 134 witnesses have been examined so far, noting that the prosecution's case remains solid with no witness turning hostile.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously reaffirmed the government's firm commitment to justice, telling the Assam Assembly that Garg's death was a case of plain and simple murder. Assam authorities have maintained that local proceedings remain entirely independent of findings reported by Singapore authorities.
