Officer killed, partner injured after West Philadelphia gunfire

Police responded to a report of a man with a gun on the 100 block of North 52nd Street just after midnight on Saturday. When they arrived, the officers were met with a barrage of gunfire that left 40‑year‑old Shane Seiber, a ten‑year veteran, dead and his partner, a 33‑year‑old father of five, seriously wounded.

Seiber was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead hours later. The surviving officer underwent emergency surgery and was listed in stable condition, though Commissioner Kevin Bethel warned he was "not out of the woods" yet.

Who was Shane Seiber?

Seiber joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 2016 and had recently completed SWAT training, hoping for a transfer to that unit. He leaves a wife, a seven‑year‑old son and a three‑year‑old daughter. Governor Josh Shapiro ordered state and U.S. flags to fly at half‑staff in his honour.

Suspect arrested and charged

Police identified the gunman as 35‑year‑old Eric Lewis, a municipal water‑department employee who lives in the neighbourhood. After the initial exchange, Lewis fled, fired at officers in a nearby alley, then climbed a tree and stayed hidden for hours. State Rep. Amen Brown, who was on the scene, said Lewis was eventually pulled from the tree by SWAT and taken into custody.

District Attorney Larry Krasner charged Lewis with homicide of a law‑enforcement officer, murder, attempted homicide of a law‑enforcement officer, possession of an instrument of crime, reckless endangerment and other counts. He will be held without bail pending a preliminary hearing.

Evidence and police response

Investigators recovered three firearms from the scene: two handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns had been taken from one of the wounded officers during the shootout. Mayor Cherelle Parker, speaking after the incident, called for expanded mental‑health and substance‑use legislation and urged the public to pray for the officers.

Community reaction

The shooting marks the 376th line‑of‑duty death for the Philadelphia Police Department since 1851 and the 129th resulting from gunfire. City officials and residents expressed grief, and the incident has reignited debates over officer safety and public‑safety legislation.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released the motive behind Lewis’s attack.
