A 52-year-old retired Indian Army captain has been arrested in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district on charges of leaking confidential defence secrets and military equipment details to an unidentified woman through WhatsApp.

The accused, identified as Babu, served in the armed forces for 28 years before retiring in 2025 from the Army's equipment division. He was picked up from his home in Keezhvallam village, near Kaniyambadi, following a joint surveillance operation by central intelligence agencies and military authorities.

How the breach was detected

Security agencies picked up suspicious digital communications originating from the retired officer's phone over several months. Investigators found that Babu had been approached on WhatsApp roughly a year ago by an unidentified handler who initially established rapport through personal conversations before probing for operational details.

The handler reportedly sought sensitive information regarding military hardware, strategic deployments, and operational matters under the guise of working on an initiative linked to the Defence Research and Development Organisation. When Babu did not know specific answers, he telephoned contacts at active Army offices and former colleagues to obtain the material before forwarding it via the messaging app.

Military intelligence tracked the unauthorised transmissions and alerted central security agencies. Interrogators detained Babu on 23 October, questioning him for two days before transferring him to the Vellore Rural police for formal custody.

Strict charges filed under national security laws

Police booked the former officer under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alongside Sections 3(1)(c) and 5(1)(a) of the Official Secrets Act, 1923. The statutory provisions address activities that threaten India's sovereignty, unity, and territorial security, as well as the unauthorised transmission of strategic official plans.

Wider espionage network under scrutiny

Investigators are working to identify the individuals operating the WhatsApp account and determine whether the breach originated from a foreign intelligence network running targeted honey-trap operations against defence veterans.

Central agencies have initiated digital forensic reviews of Babu's devices to map all outbound files, messages, and call logs. Police said further central inquiries, potentially involving the National Investigation Agency, remain underway to establish whether any serving personnel unwittingly shared sensitive data during the telephone inquiries Babu made to official installations.
