Chandrababu Naidu questions Jagan Reddy over U-turn on CEC selection law
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister says opposition leader turned against poll panel after it refused to act according to his demands.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has accused YSRCP leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy of opportunism after the former chief minister expressed regret over supporting the 2023 federal law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Speaking at a press conference at his residence in Undavalli, Naidu said Reddy turned against the Election Commission of India only when the constitutional body maintained its independence rather than bending to political pressure.
Shifting positions on electoral law
The dispute follows comments by Reddy urging the Centre to review the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. The YSRCP had supported the legislation when it passed through Parliament.
Reddy told reporters after meeting the State Election Commissioner that he regretted his party's parliamentary vote, citing recent reports of internal administrative discussions within the poll body. He called for returning to a panel structure that includes the Chief Justice of India.
Naidu questioned the timing and motive behind the sudden change in posture.
"Earlier you supported the CEC appointment procedure, but now, since the Election Commission does not do what you say, you oppose it," Naidu said.
How the selection panel compares
The 2023 federal law established a statutory selection committee to recommend appointments for the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners to the President of India.
| Selection Panel Scheme | Panel Chair | Parliamentary Member | Third Panelist |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 Act (Current Law) | Prime Minister | Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha | Union Cabinet Minister |
| Supreme Court Interim Order | Prime Minister | Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha | Chief Justice of India |
Commitment to governance standards
Highlighting his administration's focus on institutional stability and clean governance, Naidu contrasted his long record in public life with what he described as attempts to undermine electoral trust.
Naidu said political parties must uphold the law rather than patronise disruptive elements or encourage lawlessness. "You have seen me for 45 years. I do not allow any rowdy to approach me or sit with me. I have character and practise values-based politics," the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister added that law enforcement and constitutional bodies must be allowed to function without partisan interference to safeguard democratic processes across the state.
