Delhi Police serves notice at MP's residence

Delhi Police has served a formal notice to Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, directing him to join an ongoing investigation into sexual harassment allegations in the capital. Officers from the Vasant Kunj North police station pasted the notice outside the New Delhi residence of the 59-year-old lawmaker, who represents the Inner Manipur constituency.

The action follows an FIR registered on 11 October under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv), and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police initiated the case after Jawaharlal Nehru University's Chief Security Officer submitted a formal complaint based on findings by the institution's Internal Complaints Committee.

JNU dismissal and internal inquiry

Akoijam was dismissed from his faculty position at JNU on 9 October after the university's Internal Complaints Committee recommended major punishment following an inquiry under the Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment framework. Prior to his dismissal, Akoijam served as a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within JNU's School of Social Sciences.

Multiple female university students lodged complaints alleging sexual harassment against the academic-turned-politician. Following the administrative recommendation, university authorities formally referred the matter to Delhi Police for criminal investigation.

Call for thorough investigation

The case has prompted political reaction in New Delhi. A delegation from the BJP Mahila Morcha, led by its National President and Member of Parliament Roop Kumari Choudhary, met National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya K. Rahatkar to submit a memorandum requesting rigorous inquiry and firm legal action.

Lawmaker denies allegations and cites procedural errors

Akoijam has strongly denied all allegations, characterising the administrative process as flawed and describing the complaints as politically motivated. He stated that the JNU administration failed to provide him with a copy of the inquiry report, which he argued hindered his ability to exercise his statutory right to appeal.

He further alleged that the public disclosure of his identity violated confidentiality provisions under Section 16 of the POSH Act. Akoijam maintained that he had submitted a formal written response on 31 May and presented a deposition on 16 July during the university's proceedings. In Manipur, groups of supporters organised demonstrations defending the lawmaker, while Delhi Police confirmed that the investigation remains active.
