Political organisations linked to billionaire George Soros have channelled $102 million into Democracy PAC ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections.

The massive funding push represents the first congressional election cycle since the 96-year-old investor handed control of his political and philanthropic empire to his son, Alex Soros, in 2023.

Who is funding Democracy PAC?

Federal Election Commission records show the money is already moving into Democracy PAC, which the elder Soros founded in 2019.

According to an analysis of FEC filings, roughly half of the $102 million came from Geosor Corp, a private investment firm owned by George Soros. The remainder was provided by the Fund for Policy Reform, a non-profit operating within the Open Society Foundations, where Alex Soros serves as board chair.

However, accounts of the exact breakdown differ slightly. While filings reviewed by Fortune point to a $102 million total split between those two entities, reporting from Business Insider indicates that Geosor Corp contributed $62 million, with an additional $50 million coming from an allied group called the Fund for Democracy.

Aside from these institutional donations, George Soros has directly given just under $1 million so far to the Democratic national fundraising committees for the House and Senate.

How is the Soros family spending its money?

Democracy PAC acts as a critical clearing house for the family's political giving, passing funds to independent groups and other political action committees. FEC records show that by the end of June, the PAC had already distributed nearly $42 million to organisations targeting competitive House, Senate, and state-level races. This early cash injection helps Democrats address a wider fundraising gap with their Republican rivals.

The younger generation of the Soros family is also active. Alex Soros has directly contributed about $125,000 this cycle, with his largest donation going to a joint fundraising committee for Georgia Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock. His brother, Jonathan Soros, has spent more than $325,000, focusing his financial support on Democratic state parties in Alaska and Iowa.

The family is currently on track to match or exceed the $128 million George Soros spent during the 2022 midterm elections, which made him the nation's largest individual political donor that year.

Where do Democrats stand in the polls?

The massive financial backing arrives as early polling shows Democrats in a competitive position.

A late September national poll of 1,000 likely voters by Emerson College showed Democrats leading Republicans 53% to 42% on a generic congressional ballot.

More granular polling also suggests a shift in key battlegrounds. A Cook Political Report survey of 1,052 likely voters across 37 competitive House districts put Democrats ahead of Republicans by 49% to 47%. The lead is notable because Donald Trump won those same districts by an average of five percentage points during the 2024 presidential election, suggesting Democrats are gaining ground in the areas most likely to decide control of the House.
