The Gujarat government has approved the allotment of a 978-square-metre plot in Vadodara to former international cricketer and Lok Sabha MP Yusuf Pathan under its policy for encouraging international sportspersons.

The state government resolution, issued on 13 August and received by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on 29 August, covers Final Plot 90 under Town Planning Scheme 22 in Vadodara's Tandalja area. The total plot carries an estimated market valuation of ₹20.53 crore, calculated at ₹2.10 lakh per square metre.

Under the state's scheme, 500 square metres of the plot will be granted free of cost for residential use. The remaining 478 square metres will be transferred at 55 per cent of the valuation determined by the Vadodara Urban Development Authority valuation committee, granting a 45 per cent concession on that portion.

Allotment structure and valuation

To safeguard civic resources, the state government order specifies that the revenue department will grant VMC land of equivalent value to compensate the municipal body for the transfer. The decision also notes that the allotment is specific to the policy for international athletes and will not serve as a precedent for other land transfers.

Next steps for civic clearance

Vadodara Municipal Commissioner Arun Mahesh Babu confirmed receiving the state government's approval, noting that procedural details are being finalized. The proposal will now move to the VMC Standing Committee before going to the General Board for final approval.

The decision brings administrative clarity to a long-standing land application. Pathan had originally applied in 2012 for a lease on the plot adjacent to his residence, citing security considerations linked to his status as an international cricketer. Following subsequent legal proceedings over municipal procedures, a division bench of the Gujarat High Court in June allowed Pathan time to pursue his claim formally under the state government's sportsperson land policy.

With the state policy decision formalized, Pathan withdrew his pending court appeal on 31 August, enabling the civic body to proceed with the administrative allotment.
