Political friction between the government and the opposition escalated on Thursday after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to intervene in the appointment of senior BJP leader Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim in connection with the Ankita Bhandari murder case.

The appeal followed a visit by Mr Gandhi to the family of Ankita Bhandari, who have issued an ultimatum over the gubernatorial assignment. Demanding that the appointment be held in abeyance pending legal proceedings, the opposition stepped up public demonstrations in the national capital.

The Bharatiya Janata Party pushed back forcefully, accusing Mr Gandhi and his party of trying to disrupt institutional governance and constitutional processes through street agitation after being repeatedly rejected at the ballot box.

BJP defends democratic mandate against disorder

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari stated that the opposition's call for "political resistance" was an attempt to undermine Indian democracy rather than engage in lawful debate. He pointed to recent statements by student leaders associated with the All India Students’ Association advocating overseas-style mass unrest, warning that such rhetoric sought to delegitimise stable institutions.

"The people's mandate is determined by voting in elections, not by mobilising crowds on the streets," Mr Bhandari said, pointing out that voter turnouts exceeding 80% across recent state and local contests demonstrate deep public trust in India's electoral apparatus. He noted that whether through electronic voting machines or paper ballots, voters in Tripura, Assam, and student council elections in Delhi and Chandigarh had firmly chosen stability over disruption.

Party leaders maintained that constitutional appointments follow established executive procedures and that law enforcement agencies continue to handle sensitive criminal investigations strictly on their merits.

Congress faces scrutiny over internal allegations

The standoff coincides with intense scrutiny on the Congress party itself regarding women's safety and accountability. Delhi Police questioned Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur, Bimol Akoijam, for ninety minutes in connection with an FIR registered after eleven Jawaharlal Nehru University students accused him of sexual harassment following an internal university inquiry.

While Mr Akoijam denied the accusations and described the investigation as politically motivated, BJP women parliamentarians submitted petitions to the Lok Sabha Speaker and the National Commission for Women seeking strict action. Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury defended the need for due process, remarking that if found guilty in accordance with the law, severe penalties should follow without protection.

Legal commentators have also cautioned against dragging constitutional bodies into political disputes. Senior Advocate Aryama Sundaram noted that attempts to exert political pressure on constitutional and judicial mechanisms threaten the separation of powers that underpins democratic stability, urging that all legal issues remain anchored strictly to statutory procedure rather than partisan campaigns.
