Senior IPS officer Rajesh Kumar has been appointed Additional Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, elevating an experienced hand within the premier border guarding organisation.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued the formal order appointing Kumar, an officer of the 1998 batch from the Maharashtra cadre, to the post in Level 15 of the pay matrix. The elevation takes effect from the day he formally assumes charge and runs through to the end of his approved five-year central deputation tenure on 24 September 2030, or until further government orders.

Kumar is already familiar with the force's operational rhythm and responsibilities along the northern frontiers. He has been serving on deputation with the ITBP as an Inspector General since 24 September 2025. His promotion to the Additional Director General rank follows his central empanelment for ADG-level positions cleared by the central government earlier this year in March.

Strengthening command on the northern frontier

The appointment reinforces internal security command structures at a time when the central government continues to expand infrastructure and logistical reach along India's high-altitude borders. The ITBP serves as the primary border guarding organisation tasked with securing the 3,488-kilometre Line of Actual Control across Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Managing frontier defence in extreme weather and challenging Himalayan terrain requires seasoned leadership. By elevating an officer already embedded within the force's command, the Ministry of Home Affairs ensures unbroken institutional continuity. Kumar will assist the Director General in overseeing border security, tactical deployments, and specialized policing tasks across forward operating bases.

Broadening operational responsibilities

Beyond guarding difficult Himalayan passes, the ITBP shoulders key domestic security duties across the country. The force regularly deploys contingents for counter-insurgency operations, anti-Naxal deployments in central India, disaster management responses during Himalayan flash floods and landslides, and the physical protection of vital installations and Indian diplomatic missions abroad.

The Union government has placed steady focus on strengthening these paramilitary arms through modernised equipment, enhanced road networks to remote outposts, and streamlined personnel management. Senior appointments like Kumar's are key to driving operational efficiency across these high-altitude outposts. With five years of approved tenure ahead, his appointment gives the border guarding force settled senior leadership as India continues to consolidate its frontier defences.
