Efficient transit arrangements at PNBS

Thousands of festive travellers and holidaymakers passed through Vijayawada's Pandit Nehru Bus Station on Saturday as state transport authorities mobilised extra services to manage the peak Dasara travel rush.

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is operating 5,261 special buses to cater to the demand across the state and link major regional destinations, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Transport authorities structured the extra deployment across two phases to maintain smooth connectivity during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Crucially, APSRTC maintained its standard fare policy for all special services. The decision provided direct financial relief to commuting families, standing in clear contrast to private bus operators who sharply increased ticket prices to capitalise on seasonal demand.

Two-phase fleet deployment

To manage passenger flow systematically, transport planners divided the special services between pre-festival outbound journeys and post-festival return trips:

Deployment phaseTravel datesSpecial buses operatedPrimary route focus
Pre-festival outbound16 October to 19 October3,207Native towns and pilgrim routes
Post-festival return20 October to 25 October2,054Regional metropolises and return travel

Passenger traffic peaked sharply on Saturday, coinciding with Moola Nakshatram, an auspicious day during the Dasara celebrations that attracts large crowds of devotees to the famous Kanaka Durga temple atop Indrakeeladri hill in Vijayawada. The religious pilgrimage combined with holiday departures created a significant double surge in passenger movement at the central bus station.

Proactive crowd and route management

APSRTC Vijayawada Zone Executive Director Vijaya Ratnam stated that field staff monitored passenger volume constantly and reallocated local city buses whenever additional route capacity was required.

"With devotees arriving in Vijayawada to seek the blessings of the presiding deity and families heading to their native places for the festive holidays, the Pandit Nehru Bus Station is witnessing a double surge in passenger traffic," Vijaya Ratnam said.

Alongside fleet expansion, transit staff managed platform crowds through real-time schedule adjustments and coordinated departures at high-density bays. The proactive operational strategy ensured that thousands of commuters and pilgrims completed their festive journeys without experiencing prolonged delays at the state's primary transit hub.
