Memphis Grizzlies centre Zach Edey will miss Sunday night's road game against the Sacramento Kings after being ruled out with an ankle problem.

The 7-foot-4 centre was officially removed from the lineup ahead of the fixture at Golden 1 Center, depriving Memphis of their starting interior presence as they look to extend an unbeaten start to the regular season.

Edey featured on Friday night in San Francisco, where the Grizzlies staged a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback to edge the Golden State Warriors 111-108. Memphis wiped out a 12-point deficit over the final four minutes with an unanswered 17-0 run, capped by rookie Cameron Boozer's go-ahead jumper with 20 seconds remaining. While Boozer finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds, Edey battled through physical exchanges inside before the team's medical staff determined his ankle required rest.

Frontcourt reshuffle for Memphis

Memphis entered the weekend riding consecutive victories, having opened the campaign with a 123-103 win over the Utah Jazz before knocking off Golden State. Without Edey anchoring the paint, head coach staff must rework defensive rotations against a Sacramento side hungry for an opening win.

The Kings enter the contest 0-2 after tight defeats, including a high-scoring loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite Sacramento's slow start, centre Domantas Sabonis posted a triple-double in that fixture, while rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr produced a franchise-record 33 points for a teenager. Containing Sabonis on the boards will test Memphis's interior depth without Edey's physical size contesting the glass.

Weekend injury picture across the leagues

Edey's absence comes amid a flurry of official lineup changes across major American sports this weekend. In the NBA, the Kings entered Sunday managing their own fitness doubts around forward Keegan Murray.

In American football, final injury reports for Week 7 of the NFL season also sidelined several prominent starters ahead of Sunday fixtures.

For the Chiefs, who face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, head coach Andy Reid confirmed practice-squad rookie Jaydn Ott is likely to be elevated after Brashard Smith hurt his hamstring during Thursday practice. Seattle confirmed linebackers Drake Thomas and Chazz Surratt will not play, while running back Zach Charbonnet remains out despite practicing during the week.

Memphis has not set an exact timetable for Edey's return to the court, with team medical staff monitoring his ankle ahead of the next stage of their road trip.
