India ranks third in Hurun Gazelle Index 2026 as startup pipeline expands
The country overtakes the UK with 51 high-growth firms valued at ₹3.3 trillion, driven by strong growth across Bengaluru, NCR and Mumbai.
India has overtaken the United Kingdom to rank third globally in the 2026 Hurun Gazelle Index, featuring 51 fast-growing private startups valued between $500 million and $1 billion.
The report tracks high-potential firms established in or after 2000 that are on track to achieve unicorn status within three years. India now trails only the United States and China, reflecting the rising global stature and structural momentum of the national economy.
Global rankings in the 2026 Gazelle Index
| Country | Gazelles Count |
|---|---|
| United States | 302 |
| China | 278 |
| India | 51 |
| United Kingdom | Not disclosed |
Collectively, India’s 51 Gazelles represent a total valuation of ₹3.3 trillion, having raised ₹87,780 crore in funding and generating 60,228 direct jobs. For the 41 companies that disclosed financial figures, combined FY25 revenue reached ₹33,233 crore—marking a 50 per cent year-on-year growth rate compared to the 7 per cent revenue growth recorded by Nifty 50 companies.
Metropolitan hubs drive scale
India's vibrant urban innovation ecosystem remains heavily concentrated in three major metropolitan centers: Bengaluru, the National Capital Region (NCR), and Mumbai, which together account for 71 per cent of the country's Gazelles.
This urban concentration underscores the strong digital connectivity, deep capital pools, and skilled talent networks anchored across India’s core industrial and technological corridors. Healthcare provider Infinx emerged as the largest employer in the cohort with 7,000 workers, demonstrating how startup scaling creates widespread operational employment alongside tech roles.
Sectors and market trajectory
While fintech leads the index with 13 companies followed by software-as-a-service (SaaS), the pipeline is rapidly expanding into frontier technology, clean energy, aerospace, and defense.
| Key Metric | Leading Company / Figure |
|---|---|
| Most Funded Gazelle | Ninjacart (₹4,919 crore) |
| Highest Revenue Growth | Kratos Gamer Network (119% in FY25) |
| Top Angel Investor | Kunal Shah (5 Gazelles) |
| Promoted from Cheetahs | 9 companies (including Agnikul, DeHaat, GIVA) |
| Graduated to Unicorns | 7 companies (including KreditBee, Dhan, InVideo AI) |
A notable shift highlights the deepening liquidity and strength of India’s domestic capital markets. Hurun India founder and chief researcher Anas Rahman Junaid noted that companies expecting to list overseas are increasingly selecting Indian public markets, with many opting to list before reaching the $1-billion unicorn threshold. Seven Gazelles achieved unicorn status this year, while Shadowfax and TurtleMint transitioned directly to public offerings.
