Origin raises $20 million from Accel and Zacua to scale construction robotics
The Bengaluru and San Francisco-based deep-tech startup plans to put 150 autonomous robots on building sites by 2027.

Origin, a physical artificial intelligence startup operating out of Bengaluru and San Francisco, has emerged from stealth mode with $20 million in fresh capital to automate commercial interior building work.
The funding round was co-led by venture capital firms Accel and Zacua Ventures. Origin plans to channel the proceeds into manufacturing a larger fleet of autonomous robots, broadening customer trials across North America and Europe, and engineering new machines capable of handling a wider range of site tasks.
Deep-tech engineering rooted in India is increasingly drawing global backing, and Origin’s cross-border presence highlights how domestic design and engineering talent are supplying hardware solutions to international industrial markets. Commercial building sites across the Western hemisphere have faced persistent skilled trade shortages, creating immediate demand for mechanised interior finishing.
Global deployment plans
The company has set a target of reaching 150 active robot deployments on job sites by 2027. Initial customer pilots are underway in the United States, where Origin has partnered with two of the country's largest drywall finishing contractors to test the systems on real-world projects.
Beyond North America, the company is preparing trial runs in several major international markets where commercial contractors are seeking to lower finishing costs and shorten handover timelines.
| Country | Deployment status | Focus area |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Active pilots | Drywall finishing with major contractors |
| Germany | Planned pilots | Commercial interior automation |
| Sweden | Planned pilots | Interior site trials |
| France | Planned pilots | Commercial building projects |
| Saudi Arabia | Planned pilots | Large-scale construction programmes |
Expanding the machinery fleet
Automating interior work requires machines that can operate reliably in unstructured environments alongside human tradespeople. Origin’s systems rely on physical AI models designed to navigate dynamic floor layouts, manage surface variations, and execute finishing tasks without requiring extensive site retrofitting.
The fresh capital will support the engineering needed to adapt the underlying robotics platform beyond drywall finishing into adjacent interior trades. By establishing operations in Bengaluru alongside its San Francisco hub, the company is tapping India’s deep engineering base to accelerate hardware prototyping and machine learning deployment.
